Hello Forum Members: I would like to take this opportunity to personally request your assistance. If you have not already done so, can you please consider taking a few minutes to submit a letter of support for the 5 NOVA grants being requested by DNR for the SW Washington Recreation areas - including the Yacolt Burn. More than ever before, strong OHV support is critical to keeping this project moving forward. Please customize the letter to be from your point of view and then send your letter directly to: Jessica.Kimmick@dnr.wa.govThese letters are due by this Friday, June 22nd. Attached please find my 2012 letter of support from Pistons Wild for the 5 NOVA grants being requested by DNR for the SW Washington area. Please feel free to use any content you might need to craft your letter for this grant support. If you are able to also represent a local club or business please use your letterhead and it will make it easier for the grant writer, Jessica, to add the logo to the grant presentation. As you can see in the letter I am also lending support to the Non-Motorized grants in the spirit of cooperation. Ryan Ojerio from Washington Trails Association (a hiking group) supported all of our grants last year – now is our chance for “quid-pro-quo”. Go to the following link – bottom of the page and take a look at the presentation file from last year to get a look at what a final presentation looks like and the importance of support letters. www.rco.wa.gov/prism/ProjectSnapshot.aspx?ProjectNumber=11-1004Thank you in advance for your support of this project and I apologize for the short notice – other project tasks have been monopolizing my time. This late notice is completely my fault and I appreciate your flexibility in getting this letter turned in as soon as possible. Please feel free to contact me directly or post up if you have any questions or concerns regarding these grant requests. If you have already sent a letter supporting these grants - please accept my sincere gratitude for your assistance as we work to make the Yacolt Burn a recreation destination of which we can all be proud. Happy Wednesday Everyone! Crystal Crowder Pistons Wild Motorsports (360) 606-1648 Attachments:

Although there are many other NOVA grants being requested by the Department of Natural Resources for recreation areas throughout Washington State - these are the only five (5) grants that directly contribute to improving recreation on DNR lands in Southwest Washington. 12-1284 Yacolt & SW WA Motorized trail planning – This planning grant will provide funding for the staff time and costs associated with the surveying, engineering, designing, and permitting processes necessary for the implementation of the new motorized trails as described in the Phase 2 part of the RCO-funded Western Yacolt Burn Recreation Plan. DNR Contact: Jessica Kimmick Jessica.Kimmick@dnr.wa.gov12-1263 Yacolt & SW WA ORV trail and facility maintenance- This grant will support maintenance on ORV trails and trailheads located within the Yacolt Burn State Forest and the Elochoman landscape. Maintenance is required to protect natural resources and allow DNR to provide safe ORV riding opportunities. Trail maintenance activities include, but are not limited to, trail surfacing, trail hardening, maintenance of culverts, drain-dips, and ditch-outs, inspecting and maintaining bridges, and log-out/brushing. Trailhead upkeep will include restroom maintenance, litter removal, and toilet pumping. Approximately 18 miles of ORV trails and two trailheads will be maintained. DNR Contact: Jessica Kimmick Jessica.Kimmick@dnr.wa.gov12-1265 Yacolt & SW WA Education & Enforcement- This grant will provide for Education and Enforcement (E&E) on ORV trails and trailheads in the Yacolt Burn State Forest, as well as on other DNR-managed recreation sites in the southwest part of Washington. E&E assists in protecting natural resources and providing safer recreational opportunities. This project will fund one full-time E&E Specialist to patrol trails, campgrounds, and trailheads in Clark, Skamania, Cowlitz, Wahkiakum, and Pacific Counties. This grant will also be used to purchase electronic equipment and educational materials that support the E&E program. DNR Contact: Jessica Kimmick Jessica.Kimmick@dnr.wa.gov12-1264 Yacolt & SW WA Non-motorized trail and facility maintenance- This grant will provide for maintenance on non-motorized trails and trailheads within the Yacolt Burn State Forest and the Siouxon Landscape trail system that is located northeast of the city of Vancouver in Clark County. Trail maintenance activities will include trail surfacing, trail hardening, maintenance of culverts, drain-dips, and ditch-outs, inspecting and maintaining bridges, and log-out brushing. Trailhead and trail access maintenance will include the upkeep of restrooms, signage, litter pick up and general site repair. Approximately 55 miles of trails will be maintained including two trailhead facilities and 4 trail access points. DNR Contact: Jessica Kimmick Jessica.Kimmick@dnr.wa.gov12-1283 Yacolt & SW WA Non-motorized trail planning- This grant will complete the planning needed for the future development of new non-motorized trails located in the Yacolt Burn State Forest in Clark County. This project will allow DNR to fund the staff time and costs associated with surveying, engineering and design, environmental assessments, and permitting necessary to begin implementation of 15 additional miles of multi-use non-motorized trails, as described in the RCO-funded Western Yacolt Burn Recreation Plan. The purpose of these additional trail miles is to provide a shorter connecting loop trail opportunity to the existing Tarbell Trail. DNR Contact: Jessica Kimmick Jessica.Kimmick@dnr.wa.gov

letter written.. here is a copy of my letter To Whom it may concern,
RE: Grants needed for WA DNR Projects and Maintenence.
Please let it be known that I support the requests for grants that are being applied for by the WA DNR.
I am a recreational user of the forests and am among a large group who may not typically be heard from. I am involved in motorized recreation. Motorized recreation has in the past been a semi destructive use of the forest. As closures occurred a change in the mindset of some of us has began a growing trend to create a sustainable trail system that can be enjoyed by responsible motorized users of the forest. For us to continue to make this change in mindset that will ultimately reduce damage to sensitive areas of our forests, we need to be able to offer legal opportunities to refer users to. Many responsible user groups are growing at this time and the future is bright for a better, less destructive generation of motorized forest users.
Please encourage anyone that has the power to approve the requests for DNR recreation grants.
We also support grant requests for other types of recreation including hiking, biking, horseback, and two and four wheel ATV and OHV. All types of access to our forest are very much needed as the population grows and the forest user load on the forest increases. More miles equals less people per mile of trail and less wear and tear on each mile of trail. More miles also equals a happier user group who will be more likely to volunteer hours to maintain these opportunities.
Thanks again for your support of grants for the DNR. and more specifically the following grant numbers.
12-1284 Yacolt & SW WA Motorized Trail Planning 12-1263 Yacolt & SW WA ORV trail and facility maintenance- 12-1265 Yacolt & SW WA Education & Enforcement- 12-1264 Yacolt & SW WA Non-motorized trail and facility maintenance- 12-1283 Yacolt & SW WA Non-motorized trail planning-

12-1283 Yacolt & SW WA Non-motorized trail planning Hello, My name is Paul Herbig I am a resident of Clark County and a recreational motorized vehicle user. I am a member of a motor sports club that volunteers, lives and spends money in Clark County. I am also a hunter, fisherman, hiker and camper. I support the above purposed grants as they will directly affect the quality, development and maintenance of the areas I and my family recreate in. Together with the efforts of the DNR and volunteers with funding from grants like these we can give SW WA a sustainable, viable, safe and fun area to recreate in the future. Please help pass these requests for grant funds and let me know if there is anything I or my community can do to help support these efforts.
