Hi Everyone,
I wanted to update you on some operational activities that impact recreation in the Yacolt Burn State Forest:
3 Corner Rock Trail: Approximately 2 miles from the top of the trail, the trail traverses Weyerhaeuser property. They are beginning a timber sale up there and will be building road over a section of the trail. We received a Notice of Operations Beginning on 7/23/14. Please note that there are potential safety issues regarding road building and recreational use, and obey all posted signs and warnings, which will be posted on both sides of the forest operations. This is occurring in Section 28, T3N, R6E.
Silver Star Access via L-1100 Road: A culvert replacement project will be occurring past the L-1180 road on the L-1100 road, which will impede access to Silver Star trailhead on USFS Gifford Pinchot land. This project is to improve fish passage in the associated stream. The road will be closed for approximately 2 weeks. August 10 is the estimated start date. A pre-work site visit is scheduled to determine the actual start date.
New Trail Construction in Yacolt Burn: West Hagen Creek Timber Sale is to be cutting right of way wood in preparation for road construction in Unit 11 (near “campsite x”/Jones Creek C loop 1600 crossing) and along the 1580/1582 road corridor. The contractors will also be working in the L-1600 road pit- expect heavy truck and equipment traffic in this area. They will be building road (4,000 ft) at “campsite x” first, and then move into 1580 system. They will likely be building road as they continue to do rock work at the L-1600 pit. The contractors will also likely get the first bridge installed (3rd stream crossing) in the 1580 road system work and build to the second bridge prior to the fish window closure.
Lower Larch Timber Sale wants to begin building road, but likely this will be put off for a bit as it’s the same crew as is working on West Hagen Creek road work.
As always, please remember that we are in a working forest and all forest roads have a speed limit of 25 miles per hour. Drive defensively and drive safely!
Thanks and have a fun and safe summer!
Sincerely,
Jessica Kimmick
