Hi Scoundrel, First of all... Thanks for your interest in our trail system. Second... These trails are very "Everything friendly". We have installed some filters at the beginning of the trails, to keep the sedans out. However, if you're driving a stock 4 X 4, Quad, UTV or bike. You can enjoy these trails and their amazing views of Mount Hood and the surrounding areas. If your coming down on June 6th, I might be able to escort you through the woods to grandmas house. I mean, to our trails. I live about two miles from Jones Creek Trail Head. I might be able to round some friends to make a short day of it also. To address your original thought. I believe it would be easier for you to access the forest/trails from NE Vancouver, through Jones Creek. Off South 205 fwy, SR 500 exit East. I hope this helps. Let me know what you think will work. If you would like to PM your phone number, I would love to talk to you more about the trails.
Douglas
P.S. I didn't catch your name.

I am now trying to interpret this map. It looks to me as if the best way to access the 4x4 trails would be to enter by way of the Jones Creek ORV Trailhead, and go up the road marked as L-1600 on the DNR map (Google disagrees on the naming), turn left at L-1500, and proceed to where the 4x4 trails begin. Is that correct? Are ORVs allowed on L-1600 and L-1500, and the surrounding roads (L-1520, L-1552, L-1580, etc) with or without WATV plates and street legal kits? Given that this is DNR land (not USFS), and there is a note about not riding in the powerline corridor, which is a good distance from the nearest ORV trails, that probably means it's OK to drive ORVs on those roads, but the map does not specify and I don't want to assume anything. It looks like there is approximately 3 miles of actual 4x4 trails, so I'm hoping the service roads are open too, or it will be a short ride for such a long trip. It looks like Douglas has answered most of your questions. I did want to add that the best place to access the 4x4 trails is at the Jones Creek ORV Trailhead. And also that ORVs are allowed on the L-1600 and L-1500 and surrounding road with your ORV tags. Hope this helps you out. Daryl

My name is Paul. I'm more recognizable by my forum name in most places, but either is fine. Thank you both for the information. That pretty much covers what I need to learn before trailering up and making the trip.
I do appreciate the offer to show me around, but with the map and information you have provided me about the signage and legality of riding on the service roads, plus my GPS, I'm pretty sure I can find the 4x4 trails and do some roaming around with my friend Graig. We tend to move a little faster than 4x4 vehicles. I'll probably bring my ACE, and Graig will ride the Grizzly. Both vehicles are under 50", so in addition to checking out the 4x4 trails, we'll probably mess around on the ATV trails too. Now I just need to find out what the ATV width restriction is, to determine whether my ACE will fit. But I will go pester an ATV forum for that information.
Thanks again, this has been very helpful. I always try to make sure I am following the rules, but it is especially important when I have to travel this far to reach the area. It would be a crappy day to haul my stuff 200 miles, only to be turned back by a gate because I didn't do my research.
See you on the trail!

Well remember.... Don't go to fast through these trails. You will certainly miss some of the best scenery in the state of Washington. If you change your mind about the escort, let us know.
Until Next Time.... Keep it Safe and on Three Wheels Douglas
