Here is a good breakdown of the basics of our race radios.
Many of us now have this radio or the Baofeng that is very similar. The Rugged Radio comes pre-programmed with over 40 popular channels including Best In The Desert, Baja Pits, Weatherman, BFG Relay, Rescue, Checkers, 16 GMRS channels, and 7 national weather service channels.
The next step up is the RM-25R 25 watt Dual Band Mobile Radio. This multipurpose radio is dual band allowing you to transmit on both UHF and VHF frequencies just like the 5 watt handheld radios. This radio also has 40+ pre-programmed offroad channels. It should be all of the same channels as the handhelds plus another 16 UHF channels. Baofeng tech sells a similar 25 watt radio. Dimensions: L 3.75" x W 4.5" x H 1.25"
Then there is the 50 watt option from Rugged Radios. Vertex VX2200 VHF or UHF 50 Watt Mobile Radio. The down side to this radio is that it is not a duel band radio. Meaning that you either buy it in VHF or UHV. If one is to buy this radio I would recommend getting the VHF model as the majority of the race channels are on the VHF band. This mobile radio is a popular favorite for top race teams, offroading, Ultra-4, UTV's, trophy trucks, and more. Fit right in with the same technology and power the pro's use! This radio can also be pre-programmed by Rugged Radios. Dimensions: L 4.5" x W 6.5" x H 1.75"
Baofeng tech sells a duel band 50 watt radio but it is not programmed.
Im going back and fourth between getting the 25 watt or the 50 watt radio for the LJ. I have found my hand held 5 watt radio to be a quality unit. But I would like to have more range for when we are putting on events or building trails in the forest. I posted all of this here for anyone that is looking to make the jump up from the CB radio. Yes we should all get our Ham radio license. Doing so would give us more options for communications. But very few of us have done so at this time. Correct me if Im wrong but I think that Hootie is the only current club member with their Ham license. The race radios seam to be a good middle ground between the CB radio and a Ham.
