I personally wouldn't use 4:88 gears. Too short. I run 35" tires and 4:56 gears and I can do 80 mph if I want on the fwy. The rest of the rig won't handle that though. At 65 mph I'm at 2500-2600 rpms in 5th gear. I drive mine on all the adventures like Vegas and next year Colorado. It does just fine on the fwy. I have a 3.8 to 1 Atlas II transfer case for the wheelin part though. Which gives me 66 to 1 gear ratio at the tires in low range.
Just so you know... I have had Leonard do all my work on my rig and in my opinion he is the best.

I run 4.88's in mine with 33's and like Wyldman said 60-65 is maxed out. But low range sure is nice on the trails.

I'll be daily driving this for the foreseeable future. Not having a selectable locker makes me nervous for that. What are your thoughts? Am I just being paranoid? I would DD my CJ with the Aussie, but I never judge what others should do by my actions. I know my descision making process is a bit different. Jeep goes to Leonard's for a SYE, CV drive shaft and rear adjustable upper control arms on 9/28. And take off the t-case drop, you won't need it any more. Which leads back to gearing... Looking at ARB's specs, it looks like they make lockers that are for 3.73 and down, or 3.92 and up. Given this I think it makes sense to step up in gears at the same time as the ARB's. Yup. If I was changing gears, I wouldn't have gone with Aussie, I would have gotten a TruTrac. Costs the same to set it up as new gears. But I'm too cheap to pay for a selectable. Put the Bikini Top on last night. Racincowboy and Shortbus where right, this thing is a pain to put on at first. Hope it gets easier as it gets stretched out a bit. Temp makes a big difference. When I put my soft top back on when it's warmer than 75 degrees it's much easier than if I wait until it's less than 70!

nothing wrong with a 44/30 set up. its the 35 that sucks and blows. I can't comment on "its a jeep thing", but I second or third the t-case gears. Forget everything else, just fix that SYE thingy on the t-case and put a set of 4-1 gears or what ever in it. I have allot of nifty do-dads, gizmo's, and gadgets on my toyota and hands down the t-case gears are the best money spent. I'll take them over lockers, diff. gears, even PS!!! Don't fool yourself either, a 33" tire will still get you down most trails, most snow runs, and in most cases its the driver thats the limiting factor not the rig... BTW, you should have bought an fzj80 w/ e-lockers ;D flipflop

I don't know if you found a hard top for it yet. I also don't know if a YJ one would fit yours, though he said they fit wranglers from 87-95. If you haven't and it would fit there's one on craisglist for 750. Its all black with tinted windows? Thought I would toss that out there.

He also has a TON of other YJ stuff for those interested. Seems pretty reasonable for some of it.

CJ7 and YJ tops are interchangeable, but TJ tops are not.

CJ7 and YJ tops are interchangeable, but TJ tops are not. soft tops yes hard tops not so much. if you dont run full hard doors youll be ok. But the latches in the full hard doors from yj to cj7 are different.

Interesting, is it just an issue of changing the door striker? I have not ever used a hard top or hard doors.

Hey Jon the 4:1 gears in the t-case is a great idea but they are really expensive I need to rebuild my t-case and looked into the tera-flex 4:1 tera-low kit and they wanted $1200+ for it. That's as much as an atlas and in my opion the atlas is a better deal. Its a nice option because you keep your stock gears for hwy but get the low for the trail, But for $1200+ I can buy allot of other things.

so....... got the jeep back from Leonard today. unfortunately its still 2 wheel drive. his exact words where "I'm surprised you made it here". the front shaft was ready to "grenade itself". he showed it to me, and even with my untrained eye I could see things where not good. so, he's sending off to his guy to be fixed up, but its gonna be a week. looks like ill be testing the wifes escape on the rti ramp at the cruise in. unless theres a 2 wheel drive class?
I've called courtesy ford now 3 times to speak to the manager, and he has yet to call me back. the guy I gave more than an ear to on Saturday night was no help and told me I had to talk to Brian the used car manager. I let lose on him and while that was therapeutic (sp) its not enough. I doubt I will get anything out of em, but I gotta try. I even went so far as calling Chase and asking if it was to late to cancel my loan. that would leave me with some jeep parts, and my ole FJ, so I'd have to start this mess all over again but that doesn't seem to bad.
on the positive, Leonard said the tcase looked good, and was in good shape. I'm worried though that everything else is going to need replaced.
its nice, quiet and smooth in 2 wheel drive though.
