Did a compression test today: #1 = 194 #2 = 196 #3 = 208 #4 = 194 #4 = spark plug: looks like something is interfering (hitting) the spark plug you can see the metal electrode thingy is bent to the left...? I need to go fishing with a magnet in that cylinder to see if I can catch anything loose inside... You can kinda see some scratches on the top of the metal electrode thingy.... flip.flop

What type of rings? Chrome Molly rings take forever to seat. Any noise ? if something was in there you would know. Plug Looks like it was maybe dropped or damaged on install. Where are you running your timing.? I have seen spark knock do some major damage.

Yah, valve train has always been noisy, every one that heard it just said drive it till it blows its toyota I'm pretty sure we used Hastings No-Clerance Rings or something like that. Yah I do have spark knock, truck has had a lean missfire and detonation below 2800rpms for quite awhile. I've tuned and tweaked and massaged (Cam timing, ignition timing, valve clearnce, AFM, and fuel pressure) to get the detonation to stop but its still slightly there at certain RPM's. After I enrichened the Air Flow Meter that really helped quiet it down... I'm running the igni. timing at 7* before TDC. I'll retard the timing 2-3* and see if that makes a difference. Thanks for the thoughts TONKA. flip.flop

I've been busy, I reluctantly pulled this 22re out yet again two weeks before Christmas. Some of you took a listen to the engine on a few of the Thanksgiving snow runs we had and told me not to worry about it, but I knew something wasn't right. First insepection showed 3 valve stem seals missing, found them later at the bottom of the oil pan all chewed up. Looks like the cause was incorrect valve stem height. Over sized valves were used on the initial build and the machinest got the width right but not the depth, causing the valve stem retainer to kiss the seals when fully open. Engine is getting remachined, problem areas cleaned up, new bearings, and a new slightly conservative(less gross lift) camshaft is going in. Also about a week prior to me actually pulling the motor I discovered lots of coolant under my floor mats I thought ohh, its the OEM 1985 heater core finally going out on me. After I got the engine pulled I went to work dismantaling the interior of the truck to get to the heater core. I really wish I would have looked at things closer before diving in cause it turns out the heater core was working properly it was simply a poor designed OEM clamp from Toyota that caused coolant to sneek by and run down the heater core and drip coolant on the firewall leaving a large puddle under both floor mats. I found out that inorder to actually get to that little sucker you have to gut the entire truck all the way to the firewall, seriously my stearing wheel and whats left of the stearing colomn are actually being held up by a jack stand!! Looking forward to getting it assembled finally and seeing all of you soon. Pics to follow... flip.flop

Thanks Terry for the offer, I might take you up on it if I ever get the engine back, the interior on the other hand is like a numbered thousand piece puzzle, one piece at a time and you have to go in the same order... I did get the heater core in finally still a long ways to go no engine, hopefully Monday flip.flop

So the last week & half I've been working on my engine and finally got it running Friday. Only problem is the ECU is throwing a trouble code #11 and the ecu is stuck in Open Loop mode, so I can't set my ignition timing Trouble Code #11 say's to check TPS sensor & wiring, ECU, & A/C circiuts? Well I adjusted the TPS and it checked out and the A/C works, so I guess I need to test ECU. Computer running to slow to load the pics... flip.flop

I actually drove my little toyota(Toyloco) this evening. I ended up sourceing a newer TPS sensor swapped it in and it made a world of difference. ECU is no longer throwing any trouble codes, off idle hesitation is gone, ignition timing is set. The only problem left is that once the truck warms up to operating temp. the idle surges and acts like its going to die, like its starving for fuel or air. I put a vacuum guage on it and at cold idle I get 18hgp and at operating temp it goes down to 15.5hpg. Anywes I was so excited to drive it that I didn't even bolt the drivers seat in just sat on a coiled tow strap and did a couple one tire fryers in the driveway. The longer duration on this camshaft is sure allot of fun in the gravel can't wait to fix the surging idle so I can finally start to drive and wheel it again!!
