Please proceed with caution here...
I just spoke with Desmond Caravella (toyrocs) of the Cascade Cruisers this morning and he informed me that Airplane is NOT open at this time.
Hopefully Desmond will have a chance to log on here and provide us with an official update...

So, are they using the gate or not? More of a question for Toyrocks than anyone else, but I remember the last time we where up there the gate was open but there was a sign saying it seasonal closure. Just curious, as much as I hate gates this one was purpose built so I would be a bit confused on why it wasn't being used for the the purpose especially after having helped mix a good chunk of that concrete

I don't believe the gate has been closed for the winter. It's always been open from what I've seen (nov-feb). I haven't tried it since summer though, waiting for the conditions to dry out a little. By the way Ken, our group passed you and the wife right by Airplane Hill this weekend.

It does.... Thanks again Bill. The link you provided does state "Seasonal Closures #10 University Firepower and #16d Airplane Hill will be closed during the winter months and reopened in the spring." So, the question though is if its closed, why is (or at least was) the gate open? Cool video... that guy spotting stopped and helped pour concrete at the lower and upper gates. Nice guy and his buddy had a pretty decent FJ Cruiser

In regards to the open / closed status of the Airplane Hill Trail; I have not been ( or anyone in the Cascade Cruisers Club) notified of a change in the status ( closed). I have NOT actually been on the trail the last couple of weeks, so I can't say for sure if it's officially ( our otherwise) open.
We were just (4:30pm today) in contact with Stephanie (ODF) & she is not aware of a change in status. Jahmal (ODF) should be back from his days off & we will contact him for more info.
It is possible that Jahmal opened the gates sometime this last weekend, but we will have to find out. The weather has been great (dry) so if he did open them, that could have been a consideration as we discussed last year.

Trail open/closed update: Jahmaal (ODF) opened the gates last week due to good weather/ trail conditions. He said the gates will be closed sometime today ( Feb 23 2010).
Duration of closure is unknown. My best guess would be after some trail repairs/ maintenance. Time line? Dependant on heavy equipment.?
We are in discussion with ODF about positioning of materials for repair of the trail /use of heavy equipment.
We are still in need of Heavy Equipment & operator to help repair this trail.
If anyone can or knows someone that has an excavator with a thumb that can help, please contact us ASP.
Thanks. Toyrocs

Im assisting DNR as well as Pistons Wild on March 20th with my excavator. What size excavator are you needing? My brother said that Cascade Cruisers was possibly looking for an operator. Let me know.

Size of excavator ? Large. We have some heavy boulders to transport from trail head to the job site , about 1,500' . Then place in position mid-trail . Weight of boulders should be about 2k to 7k lbs ? Maybe a couple weighing more if we can get them from ODF ( Oregon Division of Forestry).
I sent you a PM. Thanks

Sorry I didn't catch this thread sooner, but yes...Jahmaal from ODF opened the gate because of good weather, and said that if the weather got bad (wet), then it would be closeing again. The trail isn't set to a time line of being closed, but more of a weather permitting to have it open.
