My dad has a 2004 grand Cherokee with the 4.0 and has had to replace the water pump twice in 130,000 miles. The first water pump had a leak and the second one the plastic internals broke. Is there a pump that doesn't have plastic internals that he can upgrade to?

I was going through water pumps pretty fast on my 1988 Cherokee, and found out I had the serpatine belt too tight. Tighten it til the belt stops squeeking, haven't had any issues since.

Check out what summit racing has to offer. They usually carry top notch stuff.

Were you purchasing re-manufactured units or new ones? As czjeeper said Summit Racing has very good ones but they are kinda pricey. They have the high flow ones which from what I hear flow better and keep the rig a few more degrees cooler then stock units.

Kinda off topic but does anyone have any experience with the 2.5 liter jeep wrangler motor Idler pullies? I have somewhat of a growl and think it could be one of the two Idler pullies. Does anyone know if they run bearings or bushings? Sorry for Hi-Jacking the thread. You might also want to search the www.jeepforum.com and they are usually a wealth of info on what works and what doesnt , good stuff and better stuff at good prices ect. They have vehicle specific forums for all kinds of jeeps and I know the TJ forum is very informative. Lance

They start to growl and end up with a higher pitch whine. VERY prone to going bad for some reason, oh and there bearings as well, or at least they are in the 4.0L.

Thanks for the replies guys. Guess I will be looking into changing that rascal. Hopefully before sand flea rally.
Can you just replace the bearing or is it an assembly?
I assume they are probably pressed in?

I assume they are probably pressed in? I'm sure they changed a few times over the years, but on my 88 4.0L I was able to press a new bearing on the pulley. You should be able to see if yours has a replaceable bearing. If so just get the numbers off it, and find a local bearing store. I always try an snag a spare idler at the junkyard, but all the ones I find growl at me. ;D Also, for the OP I've had good luck with NAPA water pumps. If it spins I try not to buy cheap stuff. You could always just go buy an OEM one at the dealer too.
