So after sitting her watching a bunch of desert racing clips on youtube, I started looking for desert racing closer to home. Couldn't find much, but did find this link on what seems to be a new race in Goldendale Washington. The whole post can be found at www.race-dezert.com/forum/showthread.php?t=54206&page=7 but heres a snipet of the brief details. "Here is the scoop on the Goldendale, Washington desert race. It will be held at the Starvation ridge motorcycle G.P. track. JUNE 12 -14 2009 (go to www.overthebarsgang.com for directions to the track) The race course is on private land, no BLM. This is a desert style race on a 10.2 mile loop, the most laps in 4 hours wins. " "Entry fees – Everyone pays $10.00 gate fee. Trucks and Buggies entry fee $200. Pays back one spot for every 3 entered in that class. UTV and (Samurai = Zuki world challenge) $100 Entry fee. Pays back one spot for every 3 entered. Trucks will have 3 classes, Pre-runner, Sportsman, and Pro Truck classes. Buggies will have 3 classes, 1600, Sportsman buggy and Pro buggy. UTV will have 2 classes, STOCK and Modified. Samurai class’s is called Zuki world challenge. Truck and Buggy class rules will be relaxed due to wide diversity of race vehicles. Zuki world challenge vehicles will have own class rules." "Course will be open for pre-run Saturday morning, 9:00 am- 1:00 pm. 25 MPH max for pre-run. UTV and Zuki world challenge classes will race together for 4 hours Saturday after noon, 2:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.M. Contact Eric Bewley @ 541-967-3255 for more info on the Zuki world challenge class. Sunday morning ALL buggy classes run 8:00 A.M. to 12:00 A.M. Sunday afternoon ALL truck classes will run from 1:00 P.M. to 5:00 P.M. pay out following scoring of truck race. Gates open Friday the 12th $10.00 gate fee, overnight camping allowed, (no camp fires due to county restrictions and tall dry grass and winds) Concession stand will be present, trying to get a couple vendors to appear with displays for parts and safety equipment. Mid Valley Crawler 4X4 club will give assistance for on course race vehicle recovery." So far they have 14 buggys and 16 trucks signed up. Now that the details are starting to firm I figure more will probably sign up. Anyway, it sounded kinda interesting so I thought I would share.

Are they going to need any people to help with this event? Check points or such that 4x4's or people with quads could be used? Maybe we could do it as a club event. It's just a idea.

I plan on supporting by bringing my money :-) But if they need any other help I am more than willing to do that as well. Not a heck of a lot of details on this yet. The info I posted seems to have just come out today.

That would be a fun outing to go on if for nothing else then to watch some very fast equipment run. I know there are guys from the NW that run the jeep speed classes and I believe class 7. It would be fun to go out and run check points ect and with a 10 mile loop rigs should come by fairly quick.
I dont think my rig would stay together for 4 hours of constant running without some major prep work. I know I wouldnt get hot thats for sure. LOL
Ah nuts I just noticed that is the weekend I will be racing in lookinglass Oregon. Oh well I will still be racing that weekend. Thats all that matters.

Hey Jon,
Turns out, one of Darel's old racing buddies, Broc Ross is one of the guys putting this event on - and he asked us to come up and help out for that weekend. Broc runs a red, white & blue Ford Ranger...
Broc was set up in the booth next to ours at the Swapmeet last weekend.
I know that some folks head on down to Lookingglass - but Darel and I will most likely be up in Goldendale. We never miss an opportunity to help support a new racing event in our neck of the woods.
I don't know if we'll race or not - we would have to have a BUNCH of fuel pitstops to run 4 hours. But sometimes, it's even more fun to work the events...

That is awesome!!!!
I'd like to volunteer to help out, not sure what they are going to need. I have been watching the thread on the DZR board and had let the guy who started that thread know I'd like to help out. He's from BC though, so I'm not sure exactly how he ties in. Anyway, I'm willing to help! This would be awesome!

Heres one of the cars thats going to hopefully be racing in Goldendale. Just looking at this thing makes me feel like a little kid! From my post over on Pirate "Quote: Originally Posted by FJCruisin_Wa I heard a rumor that you guys might be bringing this to a race in Goldendale in June. Any truth in that? Having a desert race so close will be great." :Fingers crossed: BTW, they are from Silverton, Oregon so maybe Darel knows them also? Theres also some good stuff being discussed about a race in Paisley Oregon summer of 2010. The Paisley 450. It will supposedly be set up like the Parker 450. A plan is being drawn together that will be presented to the Mayor. Nothing firm yet, but hopefully something will come of this. There is definitely strong interest in an Oregon race. BMF has said they would bring the class 1 an TT to an Oregon race, along with quite a few others. Hopefully something will come of this....

Some of the different mile markers are old telephone booths witch was kinda weird becase if you think about it when was the last time you saw one of those?? Other markers where old Ford front ends, refrigerator, rusty truck chassis, and a big barn. Witch turns out to be in the middle of the track and it gets pretty tight to maneuver around the barn so high speed is not good."

They wont run at speed, but a bunch of the teams are showing, and I'm gonna make the trek out and cruise the course in the FJC, and hob nob with the peoples. ;D I personally cornered Larry Gipson at the awards at the rally last weekend and basically strong armed him into signing up. It helped that I am tall and he is short :-) He was talking to # 199 about trying to get on Nitro Circus ;D He'll be bringing his King of Hammers truck! Looks like Jason Conover is also brining the S & N fab KOH truck also.... this is gonna be sweet! As much fun as I am having in the rally world right now, this is going to be epic! Larry before he broke down at KOH. Hope he does better this time ;D Jason's truck. Don't let these rock crawling buggies fool you, they are also built for high speed. Across the Johnson Valley lake bed these things are flatb out getting it! BTW, Shannon Campbell (the guy who did that now infamous pass at KOH) recently raced his KOH truck at the Primm 250 and placed 2nd in the 1800 Sportsman class, and 2nd overall in the 2 lap classes. He finished 2 minutes behind first place, which is pretty amazing given he had a smaller tank, and no dump cans so refueling took forever! Man I can't wait for this race!!!!

Did you ask him how well he gets along with Jessi Combs? hahaha, he did have a few choice words for a few Pirate members, but Jessi wasn't one of them. He definitely earned the lippy larry name, I've seen some self inflicted brutal stuff over there, but he seemed to almost be trying to commit digital suicide at times. I mean as an example, the attitude he threw at Billa Vista at times... what was he thinking? That guy has forgotten more tech than I will ever know. Wrong way to go about making a name for yourself thats for sure... He seems to have grown up quite a bit in the last two years. Time will tell though... and while a good chunk of the lashings he got where deserved, I do see a bit of jealousy in quite a few of the band wagon jumpers posts. Like him or not, he said he was going to build a truck and go to KOH. He did it.... now if he can only finish some day ;D Anyway, I've seen Larry on a few other boards, saying he wanted to get into desert racing, wants to go fast... so heres his chance to go fast and show what he can do.... Or wad his truck up into a ball.... Either way it should be a good show.

Good read on him, I agree. He's pretty young, if you can learn from experience, all is good.

On Sunday I jumped in the truck and made the drive out to Goldendale.... well, actually no. Not Goldendale. The track is actually in Centerville, but anyway... Driving up the Columbia through the gorge is always a nice drive so it seemed to go by in no time. Even with my GPS routing me to a closed road, and the wrong side of the track, I was able to get there by around 9. I found a place to park and wandered over and introduced myself to the folks. I met Broc and his sons, Grant (Buggy racer from BC), Dan from county line off roaders (This will be his first race in his buggy), Dave Capel from Newberg with his truck, Russ from Molalla with his suburban, George (who was in his excursion but will be racing in a bug I believe), and the property owner Scott and his friends. <Hope I got everyones name right ;D > Scott is a very nice guy. His family has owned the land for a hundred years and they have had motor cycle races for 10 years now he said. He's a very simple down to earth non nonsense kind of guy. I could talk to him for hours. He's open to have other events in the future, so hopefully this will only be the first of many trips out for me. They had a 12 hour race the day before so there was still quite a few people loading up and riding around. During that race they had gotten hit with the same storms we got here so the riders that where coming in looked pretty muddy and beat. After a bit of discussion Broc and Grant headed out in a side by side to scout out the track conditions. The rest of hung back at what will end up being the pits and anxiously waited there return to see if we would be able to go. While waiting Dan and I took the chance to talk to Scott some more. Dan asked Scott if he would be willing to do short course racing, or barrel racing, or mud drags... bottom line, Scott is willing to do it. He basically said (and this isn't to far from a direct quote), if its fun, lets do it. Scott admitted that while he has been into motor cycles for years, he's getting older and is looking at 4 wheels now more and more... with age comes a cage I guess. After about an hour Broc and Grant returned. After a brief meeting of the minds one of the track helpers disappeared and returned with copies of the map for all of us, complete with Broc and Grants updates. While the track was muddy, the sun was out and it was drying up quick, we should be fine but we may have two by pass a few of the spots. As I aired down I seemed to be getting some wierd stares. I don’t know if people thought I was nuts for airing down, or because I was going to take my FJ out there, but after airing down I fell in line behind Dan in his Chevy pick up and off we went. The track was definitely muddy in spots, so we did by pass a few places, and both Russ's Suburban and George's Excursion got stuck. I was the only one with a strap, so I pulled them both out. I think helped get me and my little FJ a little bit of street cred (or is it dirt cred) with the group. It helped that neither where stuck that bad, they just needed a quick yank. We continued on around the track and in the rock chicanes Russ's truck broke down. I can't remember what it was, but I was the only one with tools in my truck, so again Team Toyota comes to the rescue. A cable had shook loose so after a quick fix Russ was back under way and we all made it back to the start line without any issues. Excited that I should have two recoveries on film, I looked over at my laptop and saw a blank black screen. I know, pics or it didn’t happen… Somewhere the laptop had shut off... I got nothing I was pretty bummed but oh well. Later on I found out that with all the stuff bouncing around in the back of my truck the power cord had come undone. Simple easy fix... After some lunch (smashed sandwich and chips for me along with a slightly bruised orange) a few of us decided we would take another lap. I powered up the laptop and made sure the plug was in tight and set off to record a full lap for those who couldn't make it. The sun had come out, and the track had dried up quite a bit, any mud that was left was the nice tacky sticky mud. Everyone got better times on the 2nd lap thanks to the better conditions. Even with the improved conditions though it still took me 45 minutes to make that lap. I did pull over to let a few dirt bikes by, and at one point I looked up to see Grant in his buggy flying up behind me... not wanting to get nerfed I scooted over to the side, then came Broc who was in his pre-runner Explorer. He told me he only had stock suspension on that thing, but that didn't seem to slow him down one bit. He said he got it up to 50 in one of the straights, and when they went bouncing by me that stock suspension was getting beat to death! I had come into some whoops a little fast, and Broc's kid told me later that day that I managed to catch a little air also... ;D fun times! Not having a trailer, not having another truck to pull said trailer... needing to drive my truck home... all of these things slowed me down, but I had fun pushing it when I could. The truck actually did really well, and some day with proper excerise and feeding I'll give the rest of those guys a run for it.... some day... Anyway, I am camera challenged. I thought I was taking pictures of Grants buggy and Dave’s truck and Broc's explorer only to later find out that I didn't have a memory card in the camera, so no photos. I feel this is the new millenniums version of leaving the lens cap on.... which I have also done. Anyway, here are a few I did manage to snag... Grants Buggy Russ's Suburban My Truck after the first lap. I did manage to get the entire 2nd lap on video, but like I said... its 45 minutes long. But if your bored, here are the clips. (Had to break them up to You tube it) Part 1Part 2 - At 3:55 Broc and Grant catch up with me. Part 3Part 4Part 5I did see one thing missing from this place... rocks. Well that and tree's, theres only a couple. Theres a spot with softball to bowling ball size rocks, but nothing that I think anyone would consider a challenge. It would be cool to see if they would bring some boulders in and set up a rock course, but it sounded like the last rock crawling event in Goldendale left a bad taste in the locals mouth. I dont know, I wasn't there, but I heard mention of bar fights and some other hell raising type issues. Not saying Scott would be against having something, and it might be a worth while conversation to have... Bottom line here, the place is great for this race, and if people are respectful of the property owner and follow his very simple very straightforward rules this thing will grow. Not only will this be a yearly event, but other events should follow as well...

As usual awesome write up. While I was out tooling around sunday evening I saw an older ford pick-up with desert type suspension and all the oil and trans coolers up high go by on the trailer. I believe that guy was from Mulino or out that way he had a grumpy's performance on the doors. So it was nice to see a racer and muddy on the trailer headed home. That just got me all jazzed up for our season.
