To stay with my new Military theme, I want to run a "Whip Antenna". But, are whip antennas safe/work good ? Can a 102" whip be painted OD green and still work ? From what I have read, longer is better, antenna wise guys ! TIA

Hey Tracy all the antennas out there are 102" in side. The shorter (k40 style) antenna's have the 102" line wrapped under the coding. All the coils you see under the black coding equal to 102". My grandfather designed antenna's for Larson’s Antennas for years. He says the true 102" whips are better because they give out a much better wave length then the short ones. As to if you can paint them I think you can but don't quote me on it. I will give him a call and ask but he is really hard to get a hold of. Good luck and I hope this helps.

You can paint them, but the paint will not hold when the whip bends. If the antenna is stainless steel it's extremely difficult for paint to adhere to it.
The reflective nature of the paint may also inhibit the signal strength & SWR reading---( in a bad way).
If you must change the color of a metal antenna, have it anodized in any color you wish. This is a lot more expensive but will do the job!

Bruiser needs to have his tuned as well - Darel ripped off the old antenna on the Team Trophy Challenge and we haven't taken the time to tune the new one yet...
How about this Saturday at our house?
Let me know...

Gonna be a sunny day... Thinking twice about using it at a shop... can we go late afternoon? 4 ish? or even later.. 5 ish? I would go to Crystal and Darels and stay till 8:30.. then go to my DJ work at Casa Tapatia.
I would also say.. bring any antennas you have... as sometimes they just don't tune. ( had a few in my history that I couldn't tune ). Bring all your extra cables.. Plan on mounting the antenna at least a good 1 1/2 foot ahead of the windshield if possible or high as possible ( mounted high on cab or body,, or longest antenna ), to get best SWR.
I have a few meters so we can work on a couple at a time.
keep me updated. Dave.

Okay so what I gathered is Dave is going to be at the Crowder's house with his SWR meter fixin people up. Saturday from around 4:30- 5:00pmish until he needs to leave for work. Which looks to me like this thing is going to be going on from dinner time to dark time. Sounds like bonfire/Pollock to me. I've checked with Crystal and the Crowder's are happy to fire up the grill and make a party out of the thing. We will be picking up some meat and just need help with sides, finger food, drinks ect. So come whenever hang out, let Dave help you help me fix your thingy and lets do what we do best. Eat, hang out, burn things, talk wheelin and fix thingy's. (maybe drag the RTI ramp out)
So bring a chair and smore stuff, see you there.
