Yes you will have to change carriers in the D30 as the split is 3.55 and down and 3.73 and up. The rear 8.8 there is no carrier change. If you have never done gears before take your time and have someone there that has as if you mess it up it will get spendy QUICK!! Randys ring and pinion wrote a pretty decent book on this subject if you got time to read.

Bigstuck is correct. My only input is be picky. You only want to do this once. It dosn't take much to take it back out and change it, but once it's in the final time its done and if you have to take it back out you will be buying more parts. I would change all the seals and the bearings while your doing it just because its cheap insurance. Good luck man and take some photos of it and post up so we can see what you did so other people and reference it. Fivendime just did his on there XJ and put it in his build thread hear you might want to look it over. pistonswildforum.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=amcjeep&action=display&thread=829&page=3

Hey there, Like Iceman said I just finished doing my gears about 7 months ago. No issues and no problems because like he said, I took my time and did it right. Thats the biggest piece of info I can give is be patient and get them perfect. I had my D30 in and out at least 40 times and just when I thought I had it dead set I had to pull the pinion out and bearing off to re-shim it again. If you set a D30 up right it can be equally as strong as a d44 but only if its dead on perfect pattern. If you need any help or info let me know. Feel free to post up pattern pictures and I will be glad to give you a little help on what to do about getting the best pattern. The other bit of info is to have the best tools to do the job that you can. You will find that you need some very specific tools to do the job correctly. Hope I helped a little, and I hope to be of help in the future if ya need P.S. buy a good set of gears NO cheap ones, trust me on this one haha.
