The Kid,
Feel free to give me a call and I can explain the chainsaw use and what the training is for DNR, if your interested. It would take to long on the forum. My number is 360-280-5467

does this include PW work parties? like pick up the burn or vehicle recovery day? Hey Isaac, We don't usually use chainsaws on vehicle recovery or Pick Up the Burn days. If we are working at clearing downed trees or building trails on DNR land for DNR work parties - we need to have certification. Most of the club is certified already so it's usually not a big deal. Any Pistons Wild work party on DNR land is considered a DNR work party - we're just the hosting club. The certification is mostly to protect DNR from liability and to help in case of an accident to make sure that L&I Insurance will cover the incident. Whenever you sign in on the volunteer sheet for a DNR work party - you are covered by L&I Insurance. Now, if you are lucky enough to get a wood cutting permit on DNR land (very limited) and you are going on to DNR land to cut wood for your personal use - the certification is not required as you are on your own time and not under the L&I umbrella. Hope that helps, Crystal

Thanks Crystal for clearing that up. It all boils down to liabilty. We have to go through the training and inform volunteers on the requirments that volunteers have to be covered under in order recieve liabilty insurance in case of injury. Volunteers are reqired to wear a full PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) as well as take the class if they are to be using a saw on DNR land.
