my wife and I's first child was due on Sunday the 15th. As of now, no baby. She has been feeling contractions most of the day and they have been getting more intense. At 1:00pm this afternoon not much was going on so I went to work. She called me at 10.49pm and let me know the the contractions were now around 7 minute apart. So I headed home. We are now (11:36pm) hanging around the house waiting but my guess would be that we will be heading in tonight/early this morning. I figured I would start a thread to let you'll know whats up and post pix when the time comes. later.

They say expectant fathers are all panicky and impatient.
Baby watch 2010? That's a long time to wait for a baby...
Hang in there Paul!

I wanted to give you guys and gals an update on our not so little Miss Hattie. As most of you know I’m not real good at the short version, sorry. She was brought into this world by my amazing wife at 10:22pm on Tuesday April 17th @ SW Washington Med center (peace health something or another). As you know from my first post she started her labor around 3:00am Monday morning. We made the decision to go into the Family Birth Center around 2:00am Tuesday morning. It was a very slow early labor. Finally around 5:00pm Anna got to start pushing. 5 ½ hours later she was able to naturally delivered our 9 lb 10 oz 21” long baby girl after a 43 hour endurance marathon/labor. Without ANY pain medication!!!!! Nuts! I have learned the fear of God. I know that it is in my best interest to never cross this woman. I will most certainly loose. Hattie Mabel Herbig required some help to start her breathing, which even after managing to take a few breaths on her own it was very apparent that she could not continue without help. The amazing staff of nurses at SW grabbed me and Hattie and we headed to the NICU. Mom hung back so she could be attended to for a while but joined us soon after. The doctors got Hattie on a ventilator right away to help oxygenate her blood. She is primarily suffering from persistent pulmonary hyper tension amount a list of other issue. Miss Hattie’s lungs are reacting as if she is still in the womb so which means they are staying constricted, the treatments have been focused on getting her little lungs to process the oxygen she’s getting from the ventilator into her blood stream. This is very tricky; they are giving her meds to raise her blood pressure, a few transfusions of plasma and platelets and a slue of pain med mostly to keep her calm as she does not like nurses touching her very much and to give her body a chance to do what it needs. Late Wednesday the staff at SW let Anna and I know that they felt they had reach the maximum support they could offer our Hattie and that in order for her to progress she needed more. Lucky for us OHSU Doernbecher children’s hospital has the tools, staff and knowledge to continue her treatments. They welcomed her with open arms; this has meant another slue of meds, a different type of respiratory therapy and draining of excess fluid that had accumulated in her abdomen. Hattie has a long road to recovery but we heard from the nurses at OHSU that today was a good day for Hattie. We are still waiting for some test results to come back that may give us answers as to the cause of her issues, up until now they have only been treating her symptoms without knowing the cause. Please keep us in your prayers and thoughts and I will try to update this again in a few days. Thanks Paul, Anna and little miss Hattie

Anna and I spent the day with our little girl yesterday, the wonderful staff at Doernbecher seams to have found a happy place for her were she is relaxed enough for the treatments to be able to do it’s job. We had more family come and spend some moments with us and Hattie yesterday, we love the company we can tell she knows when there are extra people around it’s not a bad thing but we have to be careful not to over stimulate her. It’s kinda funny how she appears to be in complete control of everything in her little world, even the nurse have mentioned the same thing. If Hattie wants it she lets you know then she gets it. Which is very funny to her mother and me because we know the meaning of her name (ruler of the household) HA! Could not be more fitting Anna called a few time last night while up for pumping which is going unbelievably, This amazing woman/over achiever of mine has already started producing up to 4 oz of milk each pumping for this little one of our. That’s 4 time the average. Her head not going to fit in the truck soon But I love her more then anything, except Hattie (sorry babe) The nurses said she had a few dips in the blood pressure and rise in her heart rate so they gave her more Platelets and plasma to increase her volume and she bounced right back. It’s all a balancing act with this little one. This seems to be the normal procedure at night. She is responding to the treatment and the doctors and nurses are happy with her progress we just have to be patience and keep praying for her. Thank you all for your kind words, prayers and thoughts we feel they coming to us all day and the help keep us going. More to come in a few days we love you all and thank you.
