I just wanted to take a minute to thank Douglas Seal "Wyldman" and Kenny Fiorito "kenny811" for their help with a winch anchor project in the Tillamook State Forest.
We all had such a great time on the Memorial Day weekend - tons of wheeling fun in the Tillamook State Forest. I really hate that we spend so much time in the Yacolt Burn that we have been unable to give any volunteer hours to the Oregon Department of Forestry -which is where we always go wheeling.
After getting home that week and checking out all of the photos on Photobucket and Facebook I remembered a project I had heard about on the books for Waterfall. This is the picture that kick started this in motion:
Seeing all of the cable lines cut into the trees and remembering the wiggle worm that Joey had to perform to get lined up to winch some folks up the feature was the trigger.
At a previous PNW4WDA Region 3 meeting I had been talking to Earl Freimuth from the Mud Puppies. They are the 4x4 club that has officially adopted the Waterfall trail and are responsible for all of the maintenance in cooperation with ODF. Earl said that they were trying to gather the materials and equipment together to install a winch anchor point at the top of Waterfall.
On a whim - I called Douglas Seal to see if he could talk to his contact at The Steel Yard to see if they would provide a discount on a 10 foot section of 12" I-beam. He did way better than a discount - he arranged for them to donate a piece for this project. I told Douglas that I would be happy to pick it up and deliver it - but he handled that too! Thank you Douglas.
Douglas delivered the steel I-beam to Kenny Fiorito's work place, ISCO Industries - where Kenny has been storing the beam and adding "schrapnel" to the end that goes into the concrete in the ground and will be adding a loop of tube at the top for the winch anchor point. Thank you Kenny for your work on this project as well as other winch anchor projects in the TSF.
Approximately 6 feet of this beast will be cemented into the ground.
I just wanted to make sure these two guys, and the Mud Puppies, received a little appreciation for their contribution to a 4x4 trail that we all enjoy and where we all spend a considerable amount of time enjoying our sport.
In the near future, please keep an eye out on the Waterfall trail for the new winch anchor. Be sure to thank the Mud Puppies when you see them out there for their hard work and dedication in keeping one of our favorite trails well maintained and open to the public.
