Well, I was finally threw with how ugly my engine was looking. The 2 years it sat in the shop without garage doors took its toll on the aluminum and the paint on the block. So I decided to freshen her up a bit, it has been 10 years since I first put it together so I guess its time. I had big plans for it but after work came to a halt I now have to budget myself a bit. So I think I am going to focus on just a good old fashioned clean up. I plan on stripping the motor down to pieces, having the block and heads tanked, Honing the cylinders, new rings, new bearings, new gaskets and new paint. I am considering a new steel oil pan with a slightly larger oil capacity since the aluminum pan I have now doesn't do it for me, as well as a high volume pump. I also plan on gasket matching the heads and intake since for some reason I didn't do it back when I was in high school? Figure that would be a decent upgrade an give me a couple more horses. Depending on the cost I may hang and weigh the pistons and have the motor balanced as well as degree the cam. I have been doing some research and instead of my original idea of powder coating the block and heads I am going to use POR15 engine kit. Its going to save me tons of cash and if it lasts 10 more years I'll be happy. I think I am also going to find some Polyurethane motor mounts and redo the old setup from the previous owner since it looks like crap. I'll keep ya posted on the outcome. Heres a couple shots I took of my baby tore apart. I took the grill and radiator out as one, sure made it easy to yank the motor out that way. Somewhat tore apart here. Motor is a Hi-Po 283 with factory 327 heads on it. It sure rips when its together, haha

Thanks for the compliments about the truck! I also appreciate the offer for help. I finished gasket matching my intake and exhaust today. Took longer then I though, but turned out good.

Well thats ok that it took longer I am a firm believer in no matter how long it takes as long as its done right the first time that is the most important part. That motor doesnt look like it has very many miles at all from what I can see nice and clean inside.
Is that a pete jackson gear drive I spy there? Noisy or quiet version?

The motor is 10 years old, but doesn't have too many miles on it since the truck almost never sees rain. Yep, thats the noisy Pete. Found out my suspicion about too much fuel was right. I called a machine shop today and they told me exactly what I thought. So I am glad I am rebuilding it. Every bearing looked good, and so did the parts, so I'm happy about that. At least I built a good motor the first time, lets see if I can do it again. haha

Update.
I have done a bunch of cutting and grinding to smooth things out on the frame. I am now painting up the underside of the cab and bed where the over spray has been since day one. I also found a broken actuator spring in my transmission. I figured I'd fix the leaks in the transfer case as well as the transmission while I had them out, as well as a quick inspection. I also happened to notice one simple thing that I should have caught along time ago. My shocks are stretched out too far at ride height, so thats now a fix that must take place. UGHH, It just never ends.

Well, I got all my parts back from the machine shot. Of course I went double over my budget in cost, but I did have to get some new parts that I wasn't expecting like oil pump, new roller rockers since my old ones were too far gone, and lifters since I didn't mark where they came out. Note to self: remember to mark EVERYTHING! haha. I also ponied up the extra cash to have them do some port work in the vavle chamber area since they had it. Bum deal is one of there guys put my nice shiny aluminum pan in the cast iron wash tank turning it a burnt metal color......CRAP! They offered to have it polished, but they had a steel pan with a higher oil capacity instead to split the cost difference so I took that instead of the polish. Now I have to see if it will fit. Otherwise my old one will get polished. Heres a couple pics. ALSO: if you have any tips or tricks on my SBC rebuild I would be great full. I have to install roller rockers which I have never done, we'll see how it goes. Are Proform rollers good enough for me? I already have them but can change since I haven't opened them yet. used pan they gave me.

I would imagine proform rockers will work just fine for you. That pan looks like the pan we ran on our nascar modified. The only issue on a jeep would be the front driveline that may contact the larger sump. Of course that could also be modified and refab the pan to fit so you have a little extra oil capacity. Or just get some polish and lots of elbow grease to polish your pan you know already fits that looks like it has a deeper sump then a standard SBC pan?
The only tips and tricks I know of are make sure you port match your gaskets and check your tolerances closely. Lots of assembly lube on the cam, crank and rod bearings Or Oil. Myself I have always been told by our engine builder to use assembly lube and a good break in oil like Joe Gibbs break in oil. Then change it fairly quickly after break in. Also torque all the components in the proper pattern at torque intervals do not torque the bolts all the way the first time is what I have always been told slow and easy is the way to go. Just my .02

:-[update There seems to be little hammers that found there way into my motor? I started it up today and found a horrible noise coming from what I think is the top end. I shut it off after a few seconds. I also have the timing way the heck advanced.....like 16 degrees BTDC. Its what my mechanic said it should be at and it runs smooth, so I guess thats where it should be. I pulled the valve covers off and there was no markings on them or the rockers so those aren't touching. I wiggled the new roller rockers around and they seem loose but not sure. I also checked the nuts that hold the rockers on and there tight. The guy at the machine shop is coming to my house tomorrow to inspect and listen to it. I pray its not in the bottom end, which it shouldn't be since I went over it 3 times. I hope Its ok for the 4x4 show, otherwise its the XJ and 3B for me.
