So I was watching this video and saw the guys winching about 5ft. up on a tree... I commented that it didn't look like responsible recovery tactics, and asked why they chose to winch from high up on a tree...
Was I wrong? I understood that winching higher up a tree than 2 feet from the ground is wrong...
Here's the video..

If the tree was large enough to support the weight then they probably chose that high to keep the line pull as straight as possible. Especially when running synthetic rope the more you force the rope to rub against something the more chance for wear on the rope. It also could have been if it was lower it would force the cable/rope to contact something during the recovery which also could be bad.

I watched this video last night. It looked like to me that they had the tree savers up high to help pull the Jeeps up out of the mud. Tom also brings up a couple of good points about keeping the line pull as straight as possible or the line contacting something. What Im really trying to get at here is that its not very often that Tom has a good point. lol

I see what all of you are saying and will add this. I was taught to place the saver as low as possible to insure that you were not putting unwanted leverage on the tree. Which could cause problems for it or you. If you have a big tree this is less of a problem.
I get trying to dictate the direction of the pull "up" but I think the forces of going forward and gravity pulling the tires down negates the line pulling up. Maybe not though.
I think if you are trying to keep your synthetic line off some rocks it's a good idea but if it to keep it out of the mud you shouldn't go to Elbe.
This brings up another good point which is synthetic vs steel. I don't own synthetic for one reason. I have other things to buy long before synthetic winch line. But I think that the durability of steel is something to consider in the northwest. Seems like winch lines here spend plenty of time dragging over rocks, dirt and wood. Also there is the rain and things like recovering vehicle from ravines which this club has been part of plenty.
End of rant

Thanks for the feedback, I'll keep that in mind. While I was watching this video, I was thinking: 'these guys have deep pockets'... I think that may be the reason they all had synthetic line..
I asked what the reason for winching up high was on youtube, and the guy/group who posted this scoffed at me, and proceeded to rant..
I agree that in the NW, steel might be the best.
Anyway, thanks again... feel free to see how they were quick to defend themselves by going to youtube and reading their replies haha...

1st... I take offense to the deep pockets and the synthetic line comment. I've been running synthetic for the last 5 years and am far from having deep pockets. As far as steel vs synthetic it's personal preference. It's not good to drag any of them in the dirt or over the rocks. So when winching use your brain.
Second... Not a single one of us was at Elbe on the day that the JK Experience ran the trail. We don't know what the trail conditions were, what was slowing them down, ect... It's always easy to be the Monday morning arm chair quarterback. In fact I'm so good at it that I would've won the Super Bowl this last Sunday.
C.... I've read the comments on the video. And while I didn't really care for how your original question was phrased, it was a legitimate question. The reply's from them were in my opinion a little childish. That said there are a lot of keyboard commandos out there that spend a lot of time in their moms basements with one hand on their joy stick and the other typing away telling everyone that they suck. If you were in Eddy Ho's (I think that's his name) spot out making these videos with your blood, sweat, and tears and then someone says something negative about your work you might get defensive too.
Lastly.... I know that your heart was in the correct place when asking your questions on YouTube. But I want not just you, but everyone that's involved with Piston's Wild to remember this. Club member or applicant, downtown Portland traffic, on the trail, or on the Internet. We all represent this club! Make sure that wherever your at, whatever your actions are, and anything that your saying that your representing your club and your spot in a positive light!
Thanks
Daryl

I agree with you, but the comment about the deep pockets wasn't because of the synthetic line.. it was because they appear to have a few sponsors and loads of expensive parts... I think their rigs are very well built... I suppose it would have been better for me to ask here first, but the original question seemed innocent enough... And, on their side, I suppose if I tried, I could take offense to the question, as it's hard to read 'tone of voice'... Next time I'll just ask here first, that way I can get an answer from people who know me, and know that I'm new to this, and asking a genuine question with no ulterior motive... I went back to the video, and it looks like they deleted my last couple comments... I had mentioned that the guy should be more positive, and helpful, and that his comment "one thing I really hated most about wheeling up in your neck of the woods" probably isn't the attitude a potential sponsor is looking for... Anyway, rant over... Thanks for the tips everyone!
