I'm looking at bumpers and the one I may get has a stinger, which honestly I don't really like the look of. To each there own, but the thing just seemed kinda ridiculous to me. So.... I was wondering, do they actualy serve a purpose. I asked my friend google, and the first link was to a guy asking the same thing on Yotatech.com. www.yotatech.com/f116/stinger-bumpers-123200/Anyway, he first response... well as the responder said, no words needed. So yeah, they do serve a few purposes. ;D

By the way, the stinger / bumper does seem to be tubed into the frame in the above pic. Don't go trying to stand on your stinger boy's and girls.... Your miles may vary, do not try this at home.

It seemed like for a while the stinger front bumpers were really popular, but not as much anymore. (That could just be my perception though) I like to think that if I'm in a scenario where I'm pitching over forward that I would be with it enough to 'drive it out'. That's probably wishful thinking though... ;D The 99.9% of the time you spend not going straight over the hood, it seems to me like those stingers would be a hazard to everyone both on and off road. I dunno.

For other uses of the stinger I suggest checking out that Yotatech thread i referenced earlier and checkout "Mollywhomping"

when i put the "stinger" hoop on my winch plate i had two thoughts. pitchpoling wasnt one of them so i didnt end up with something super huge and funky. i wanted some radiator protection in a roll over and also use the stinger as a tow truck arm for winching other vehicles up in the air.
so far i have used the stinger to winch another vehicle up in the air and it worked great. it turned out to be the guy who suggested i put a stinger on for winching other vehicles. he smoked some rear control arm bolts a couple years ago. his rear axel was rolled up foreward a couple feet and it was very helpful to winch the rig up to make the repairs.

This is what a stinger is for That is some times true... but it also could have been because of the stinger that this happened. There comes a point where the stinger takes your front wheels off the ground so even if you do/did want to "drive out of it" you would not be able to because the front wheels are off the ground ... no traction A few other important things that need to be considered are the size of your tires and how far forward they sit in comparison to your front bumper... (approach and departure angles:-) I agree with the person who brought up drivers ability to do something that feels so un-natural...... Using the skinny pedal when everything in you says STEP ON THE BRAKES... For anyone that has been there before you know exactly what I am saying ;D hehehe yikes........ w

I have been there before and I do know what it feels like, I am still pulling the seat cover out of my , ... well you know. That is exactly why I run a stinger and a radiator/nose hoop. If you have wheeled a bit, like some of us older folks, then you get used to those icky, sick in the stomach feelings and just go do it any way. That being said, I would rather have it and not need it then need it and have a huge repair bill !

IMHO a stinger is not necessary for almost all wheelers. Some people with short wheel base rigs, might be able to make a case for them though.
I will NOT install one on my rig. 117" WB with ride height control & low center of gravity makes it less likely I will need one ( knock on wood!).
