Airplane Hill in Tillamook is getting tough to get up, that was expected this winter. To keep ODF from pressuring us to close during real wet weather we need help to pass the word to use your winch instead of looking for ways around the obstacles. More difficult trails were wanted in the area, to keep them we all need to stay on them. Rumors of closure happened when ODF posted "Notice" signs at each end of trail. That is all they are, a notice that during extremely wet weather the trail will be closed. If the gates are open the trail is open. Now that you are here, what do you think of a group of wheelers that drive through an obvious roll over accident scene on a busy gravel road and steal the flashing red light on a vehicle at the start of the blind corner as they go by? This actually happened!

I hate to say it but it doesnt surprise me what clowns now a days are capable of. It doesnt surprise me this day in age that people will just duck their heads in the sand hoping things will go away.
I hope they find the clown that stole the emergency light and hang him by his toe nails for a while.

This actually happened! Obviously - I would personally consider them to be lower life forms but I would need all of the details to make an accurate determination. If you have some facts and are going to call someone out on THIS forum - call them out by name or description-- please don't dance around the story. This type of "wheeler behavior" only stops when the offenders are called out for their actions. Peer pressure will always be the most powerful enforcement tool that we have at our disposal. I was broke down on Lessard Road with the motorhome and ATV trailer on the way to Jones Creek for the clean-up. The tranny failed on a hill in between two blind corners. I put out a reflective triangle and two orange cones spaced out behind me and a woman in a Honda mowed all three down and drove on around me exposing me and the next car coming down the road to a potentially dangerous situation. Which begs the question -- Is the woman in the Honda criminal or just plain stupid?

Per our phone conversation yesterday; report them to LAW enforcement---- AND AND AND BLACK BALL THEM. A good area to black ball would be all the blogs/ face book/my space/reports to web site moderators if they are doing unlawful things. Peer pressure is probably the best way to deal with this or just simple BOOK_EM Dano / make an example out of them with consequences for their actions.
It's not too late to make a police report! Toyrocs

are you talking about the FAKE scene that took place during the poker run? if so it is kinda lame of someone to take a 9.99 flashing red light, but you cant police everyone.... heck i had a group of kids behind me doing like 40 down the gravel roads an then skiddin up to me. the is always gonna be that bad apple floating around

Happens to me on the road all the time people are too busy on the phone or reading the paper or doing make-up and other things you dont want to know about. They are distracted and no paying attention then scratch their head after they crashed like "duh what happened". I too would like to know all the details of this as I was not there when the light was stolen. If by chance someone knows these people they need to have a talkin to. Peer pressure is a great way to straighten some that are not following the rules.

The truth in the story always comes down to the details - I am dying to hear more about this "story"...

Our Gang Off Road had a real accident on the way back to camp from the fake accident check point. Apparently one of the group that passed us knew the owner of the vehicle that had the light on it and thought it funny to grab and go. Not everyone in that group thought it was funny and made him bring the light back. I didn't name names because not all of them were involved and I wanted to protect the innocent. They know who they are. This is a good reminder, like Piston Chick's story, to always watch out for yourself because there are people out there that won't watch out for you. Thanks in advance for passing on the word about Airplane Hill.

I cant comment on airplane since I have never had my rig on that trail. If the weather is bad, close the gate......isn't that what it was for? If idiots are tearing up the place, well that sucks big time though the trails are often littered with idiots and its hard to stop them if were not around to catch them in the act.
Edited to stay on topic......

This is second hand info so take it for what it's worth ( unconfirmed). Possible major mechanical failure in the suspension/ drivetrain just before the roll over.

As stated before second hand info: speed was in the 25mph area with no other known risky behavior. Toyrocs

I did read that it was second hand info, which seems to be clouding this whole topic. I would like to hear from the original poster with the facts please so we can resolve this situation.
I'm with Crystal, please tell the "whole story"

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and share what I know. Again my info would still be considered "second hand" because I was not there - but I believe this information to be accurate and from reliable resources.
After receiving a few e-mails and making a few phone calls to confirm information - this is what I found.
Yes -there was a "staged" fake roll over scene that was part of the poker run - a checkpoint that involved the infamous red light, a gurney and use of the kids game, Operation. Harmless fun and games...
Yes - there was an actual real roll-over accident that happened to a girl in a Jeep TJ who belongs to Our Gang Off-Road. She was not speeding or being reckless - the roll-over was caused by equipment failure. No one was injured in this accident except for the Jeep.
Yes - the red light was also being used at the scene of the real accident while crews were working on the Jeep TJ to make it "towable".
Yes - a younger kid (who no one seems to know his name) who was running around with two well known expereinced wheelers snagged the light (not necessarily in a criminal way - but trying to be funny). One of those two well known wheelers chased the kid down and made him bring the light back.
Our hopes here are that the two well known experienced wheelers will work harder to teach the younger wheelers who travel with them about what is appropriate behavior on the trail.
That's what I have - please feel free to comment if I have mis-spoke in any way...
Crystal
Oh yeah - in regards to Airplane - if they are abusing it -
CLOSE & LOCK THE GATES!

I have not seen AirPlane Hill since CTW. The section that is becomming a waterfall was denying ALL short wheel base rigs. The shortest rig to pass that day without winch was an extreme modded LJ on 37's and most that drove it were much longer with larger tires. It was a dry day.
That day i had a long conversation with ODF Jamal (Sp?) about that particular section of the trail as we watched Dr. Jones reel in the SWB rigs. We agreed that fifty bags of concrete, forms, and some steel might fix the step that is being dug out, but only if the larger boulders remain before a fix is attempted.
I think the trail should close until that section can be repaired.
YMMV
