OK,, I am thinking I want ( read need ) an offroad worthy GPS unit that can have maps of our area offroad areas. I am tired of not always knowing where I am at brownscamp. I want a fairly easy to learn system with enough versaltility to add trails and roads as things change. A portable or handheld unit that would work for quad as well as my truck would be best.
Don't just tell me what someone else has.. I see alot of that stuff on other forums.. I want to know what works. thanks. Dave.

I have been doing alot of research on this for my christmas present. I decided on the garmin 60csx. It is very easy to use and you can add a 2gb mini sd card to it as well. It comes with a base map which essentially is just like major roads, freeway exits stuff like that. It also shows lakes.
If you wanted topo type maps those are available seperatly. The 60csx also can do like the automotive gps in that you can load in the automotive software and still use it as an off road gps at the same time. Kind of like two birds with one stone. Once again that roads map is available seperately.
The 60csx also has a built in altimeter and compass. If you didnt need those I would go with the 60cx it is exactly the same except for the altimeter and compass functions. I found the best price for mine on amazon.com and I also got the 2gb card with it as well for under 300 shipped to my door.
I hope that helps some. If you want I will bring it to the meeting with me and you can play with it a bit and see if you like it or not. Let me know
Lance
Edit: Thanks for catching my mistake CZjeeper. I had it all backwards. All fixed up now.

I've been rockin' the Garmin 60CSX for over a year. I'm using the Oregon/Washington 1:24k card in it. It has 1:24000 topo, and streets/address data. I hate Portland, and it's gotten me everywhere in town. The topo maps are great, way better than anything I've seen.
By the way, the unit w/out the compass/altimeter is the 60CX. The C is color, S is sensors, X is the exchangeable data card (Micro SD).

yes,, i have been leaning to the 60. I was hoping someone would say that the trails of browns camp could be easily uploaded from a website or something... keep talking.
I would have just went ahead and purchased the 60 this weekend but have not found the compass model under 300 yet.
Lance... bring it to the meeting. and if you find anything out about maps showing trail systems.. that is the info I MOST want to learn about. Dave.

I will bring it to the meeting. I will keep digging on finding maps already laid out for brownscamp. I think Richard and his gang have them all mapped on gps already. But dont quote me on that. Would you just want the trailheads mapped or do you want the whole trail mapped?
Dave, I got my 60csx from amazon.com they have it there for 284.00 shipping is free. They also have a 2gb micro sd for less then 8.00 if you get them together I think the final price was 291 bucks. Give me a call if you want and I can walk you through it. Free shipping takes 5-9 days so you get what you pay for but free is free.
Let me know this price has been holding for the last month and a half so dont feel any rush. If you want to play with mine at the meeting and then decide that is what I would have done if I had the opportunity.

i have had a several garmin units and currently use a rino 530HCX. before the 530HCX i had a 530. the HCX upgrade allows the unit to hold unbelievable satellite reception in the timber and inside a vehicle.
i am not suggesting you need a Rino with HCX, i just saying its the best thing since sliced bread for walking around in the woods. all of my hunting party also have these units. these units also talk to each other and will continually poll each other allowing the users to track each others location.
i lost my unit elk hunting when i fell down into some very thick cover in the stella unit a couple years ago. when i caught up to my hunting partners i was able to "find" my unit using a similar unit that was already synced to mine.
these rino's are also a 5watt frs radios and have excellent altimeter, compass and a host of other features including projecting waypoints ect.
if i were looking for a navigation unit i would look at the mapping hand held garmin products with the HCX gps receiver.

fogot to mention i know a bunch of people who use the garmin etrex and they work great but use a lot of batteries when navigating.
the ni-cad garmin battery powerd units are worth the extra money.
