My nephew was going to dump (and he meant it literally ) his 85 XJ, because "it won't start, and the battery kept going dead." He's only had it for a few months. It's just the alternator. He's not the brightest bulb lol. so I offered $100 for it. We were able to throw in a good battery, and drive it home today. It's an 85 2 door, manual transmission, with the V6. (yes the V6.) Since our current jeeps are our daily drivers, hubby and I are planning on making this our wheeling rig. It's already got a primer paint job, some trail rash, and a thrashed interior lol. Perfect right? Since we won't be worrying much about how it feels on the street the plans are to throw in a bastard pack(S-10 leaf springs) throwing out the sway bars, and putting in Grand cherokee v8 coils+spacers. I'm thinking tube doors might be fun too. I figure for $100 we can't really lose on this thing. It will be fun to have a thrasher! We haven't come on any of the wheeling trips, because we can't break our daily drivers lol. This will be a super cheap budget build, ;D and we hope to have it ready for the summer!

Congratulations !!
hmmm $100 starting price.. I predict it will be a $4000.00 rig within 2 years.. ( not what it will be worth.. just what you will have into it..) speaking from experience. my $1300 blazer is at about $7 or $8 thousand now.
your rig will be a great rig.. have fun.
oh yeah.. I do know someone with a $150 rig that has had it for 7 or 8 years and has only spent like $100 on it.

lol Hootie, the plan is to spend as little as we can to keep it trail worthy. The junkyard will be our friend. LKQ is literally right around the corner from us. Ryan will get lots of practice improving his welding skills, haha. One of the first things we will have to do is fix the big hole that's right under the driver's feet. There's only carpet between your feet and the road! Good thing we have some scrap metal kicking around. If it gets to needing any serious cash put into it, we will keep what we can use for spares for Ryan's 88, part out what we don't want, and scrap the rest! I wanted to kick the kid in the head when I heard he was talking about dumping it. Especially since he knew we had gone into the Burn to help clean crap like that up! His dad heard about it, and was the one that told us. He knew we would be mad, so I immediately offered to buy it. I want to start tearing it apart, and working on it now! I just need parts. Boo. lol.

I got a call on Tuesday, a friends buddy wrecked his '93, they wanted to sell me the relatively fresh 4.0 HO and auto for $200. It would be a pretty easy swap to a decent engine.

Hey thanks for the heads up! But I will pass on that and let Chris have "dibs." That's a good deal on it though! That conversion would be more work then we want to bother with on this rig lol. I know the v6's in these old ones are a bit on the wimpy side, but i think it will do just fine for our purposes. The engine runs pretty good. I think most of it's problems are cosmetics, and suspension problems. It shimmies and shakes on the road, and makes more squeaks then an angry rat lol. We don't care about the cosmetics much, and we will be replacing most of the suspension when we lift it anyway. ;D

Thats cool you got a certified wheeling rig ;D Hope to see you out on the trails...... Are the doors good? They could use the doors for half doors since I think there the same style. And that's a good price for a decent 4.0L

I want to make some tube doors for it. ;D I have seen write ups on a couple of forums, where guys made them pretty easy out of spare tire swing outs. those are cheap and easy to get too.

It's still in the Cherk, and you can hear it run. I will get some contact info for you. As far as I'm concerned, the 2.8 got a a bad rap. They make decent power for their size and weight. Technology has moved by them, though.
