By Columbian staff Tuesday, March 30, 2010 A 21-year-old Camas man died early Sunday morning when the ground beneath his truck’s tires gave way and he tumbled into a pit near Larch Mountain.John D. Totton was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said. Totton was ejected from the vehicle when it fell into Jackson Pit. He was not wearing a seat belt. A preliminary investigation found that alcohol may have been a factor. The Clark County Traffic/Homicide Unit is investigating the incident. “The setting was a party where lots of drinking was going on,” said Clark County Sheriff’s Detective Alex Schoening. A toxicology report is not expected back for several weeks. camas.katu.com/content/camas-man-dies-road-accident

Another reason that ALL the locations should be on GPS for the 911 people. Maybe some day.

Read it in The Columbian as well. Paper stated it happened at the Jackson pit where it appears the ground "gave way under both driver's-side tires." Sounds to me like it was the pit closest to Jones Creek. Don't know of any other "pit" along the pass where you could roll off. If so, up top above the pit is a HUGE drop off and dangerous place to be. It is sad this has happened but maybe they will do something up there to prevent this from happening again.

Sad to hear about, I went to school with the guy. Back in 1994 a similar incident happened to a guy my wife and I went to high school with. He was a passenger in a truck that rolled near the west end of Jacksons Pass, and he was ejected also and crushed by the truck and killed.

That is too bad and they didnt say if this happened at night or daytime but I would have to assume alcohol was involved one way or another.
When will people learn that drinking and driving is no good for anyone and is totally preventable. I have no problem with people drinking and having a good time as long as they are not operating anything motorized be it quads, 4x4's, sandrails whatever. If you are kicked back in a lawn chair and happen to roll over the only thing that will probably be hurt is your pride and get laughed at a bit. No harm no foul.
Ok enough from my soapbox.

Lance It happened around 3am. In another article they thought alcohol may have been involved. Now in my experiences if your up around Larch Mountain at 3am alcohol is usually involved! The Associated Press VANCOUVER, Wash. — A Camas man was killed in an off-road rollover accident on Larch Mountain in Clark County. The sheriff's office says 21-year-old John D. Totton was not wearing a seatbelt about 3 a.m. Sunday when his Toyota pickup truck rolled off a cliff. The ground gave way under the tires on the driver's side and he was ejected as the truck rolled into Jackson Pit. The sheriff's office says Totton died at the scene before a Life Flight helicopter could arrive. --- Information from: The Columbian, www.columbian.com

I kinda figured that 3am and booze is usually involved up there. I have a feeling I know exactally where he was when the ground gave way and he rolled.

What do you mean Lance "In a Toyota no less" I just meant that it seems like there are mostly toyota's up there. Hey now dont forget I have one in the garage as well. They are only so tuff. Of course having your seat belt on usually helps as well. I personally think toyotas are the toughest little trucks around god knows I beat mine on the track year after year and it just keeps on going. Not real fast mind you but never had a dnf since I started racing my toyota.

People need to be careful what they say. If this is supposed to be a public forum to show how the off road community handles Land and public relation issues, we need to be careful not to stereotype or place judgment on people when we do not have all the facts. This has popped up more than once on this forum recently. Just remember that there are people out there that don't look at the good, and special interest groups are always looking for something to spin. My own out of touch uncle told me that people that drive Toyota's by Mt. Saint Helen's are poaching all the deer, I told him thats B.S. and all bald guy's suffer from E.D. its not fare to group people by the color of there skin or what they drive. With that said, sorry for using your post as an example Lance but I know you'll get what I am saying and if your pissed at me you know where to throw the eggs. I am not saying that this guy wasn't drinking or that he wasn't in the wrong I'm just saying stick to the facts, and don't add unnecessary stereotype's. If you assume you make an a-- out of you and an a-- out of me. If I touched a nerve and you feel you need to say something to me call me. I'm not trying to piss anyone off I'm just tired of people being guilty till proven innocent.

See that's the problem with typing....you get no emotion. I know what Lance meant only because I know him. I dont stereotype, I round up ;D Ryan, I know I wasn't surprised to hear it since we have lots of problems with reckless Toyota owners in our area. I also assumed there was alcohol involved....is that stereotyping everyone up there having fun, no it isn't but its fair to say that what you see up there is often what your first reaction is when you hear of a problem.

Exactally. I was probably a bit out of line with the toyota comment. Not everyone that has one wheels one or drives one is a bad person I know that. I would hope that wasnt the perception people would get that know me. If it was I apologize for that. I know there is good and bad in everything. I get frustrated when things like this are 100% preventable and still happen. Now dont get me wrong there is 100% personal liability that goes along with this particular case as well. People that know me understand I have a BIG problem with drinking and driving. That has been said before and no need to beat a dead horse with it again. Anyway I have fixed the post and apologize for that comment if it was out of line. Fact or not that didnt need to be in there.

Well I guess if I round up. Jeeps owners are a very large group of people, that do a lot of illegal four wheeling. I only say this because I'm rounding up and have seen lots of jeeps doing bad things. How stupid does that sound. If your OK with saying things like that than I do not want to be associated with you. Here is something I try to live by.
Quote: CLASS
Class never runs scared. It is sure footed and confident, and it can handle what ever comes along.
Class has a sense of humor. It knows that a good laugh is the best lubricant for oiling the machinery of human relations.
Class never makes excuses. It takes its lumps and learns from past mistakes.
Class knows that good manners are nothing more than a series of small sacrifices and minors inconveniences.
Class bespeaks and aristocracy unrelated to ancestors or money. some extremely wealthy people have no class at all, while others who are struggling to make ends meet are loaded with it.
Class is real. You cant fake it.
Class is comfortable in its own skin. It never puts on airs.
Class never tries to build itself up by tearing others down. Class is already up and need not attempt to look better by making others look worse.
Class can "walk with kings and keep its virtue and talk with crowds and keep the common touch." Everyone is comfortable with the person who has class because he is comfortable with himself.
If you have class, you've got it made. If you don't have class, no matter what else you have, it won't make up for it.
I have known Lance for fifteen years and I hope to call him a friend for many more. I used his post as an example of what I saw going on in this forum because I knew he would not take it personally that I singled his post out to make a point. It is our job to reach out to people and try to help them see the problems they are or could cause with poor judgment, and how much they could achieve as a organized group. But when people come on a site and see that a group of owners is looked at as the bad seed, that does not make that person feel like this group is welcoming them. And therefore less likely to join the cause. Negativity does not welcome people in, it drives them away. I'm not playing politics this has nothing to do with what happend at the rock pit. Just the reaction. There will always be problems with people making the wrong decisions, all we can do is try to educate people to limit them. It is OK to say that the man was wreck less or breaking the law and you do not condone that, but to say that its not surprising what he was driving is overstepping. Because when it comes down to it he was driving a four wheel drive and that is a group that we all fit in to and somewhere somebody is saying " I'm not surprised he was in a 4x4 because there is a lot of those reckless 4x4s around this area" and that is a black eye for all of us.
If I'm wrong than let me know and I will step away from the club so not to inter fear with the groups feelings or agenda.
