Rig looks great, Brandon.
Perfect setup to learn on.
If it's an auto, you'll have 3.55 gears. A cheap solution to get some gearing back is to swap in some junkyard axles out of a 4cyl XJ. They come stock with 4.10's. The downside to that is most are a D30/D35 combo, but with 31's you shouldn't have a problem.

I have 2 XJs, 1988 with 3.55, 4.0L I6, 4 speed auto tranny, and does ok on gas (14-16mpg) and a 1986 4.10, 2.8L V-6, 3 speed auto tranny, gets (10-12mpg). Both jeeps just had brand new motors put in the last year. The 1986 tops out at 65mph, where the 1988 tops out at 90mph without pushing them too hard. The 1986 does real good in 4LO in the sand, where as the 1988 does better in 4HI in the sand. So what motor and tranny do you have?

I have the Straight 6 4.0L HO motor with the 4 speed auto (sorry cant remember the name) then a D30 in front and D35 in back with the 3.55 gears. That junkyard idea did catch my attention though. so i just got get the gears or swap out the whole axle from a 4 cylinder?

Or the XJ's with the V-6 if your looking for the 4.10, but that's not a 100% garuantee. Plus on ours, they put 4.11 in the front with 4.10 in the rear from the factory. If you get the axle numbers, you can look it up on the Dana web site.

Brandon, its looking good I dig those black wheels on red XJ's. As for the gear ratio I "personally" if it were my rig I wouldn't worry about it for a little while, just to see if I would go bigger on lift and tire size. On the other hand its a good idea to re-gear any time you venture from stock if you plan to use it mainly as a daily driver. It cant hurt to go lower now in preparation for taller tires later, you may just be the red snail on the side of the road, but hey you can crawl like no tomorrow and have lots of bottom end power. Its all dependent on you and what you want. As a few said, junk yard axles are good too, for one you will be able to search for a D44 or C8.25 which is much stronger then the D35....all rear axles. Let us know if we can help any with install or what not. The axles aren't too bad to install, half a day at max.

brandon it looks real good and complete axle assymblies are about 150 at pick n pull breaks and everything. and if you hadnt considered it an 8.8 is just as strong as the 44 or stronger takes a little more work but after 95 they all had disks.
