There is another fire on Larch MTN( noted on the afternnon of Saturday Aug 14 2010). This fire is centered about 1.0 mile SE of the radio towers close to the DNR road L1400. Hear-say has that the ground fire crews that have been fighting it have been called off & helicopters are in the area to fight this fire. Winds are are about 15-20 mph & gusting higher. Current wind direction is from the SE driving smoke to the NW towards Four Corners. Temperatures are about 88 degrees & low humidity + dry winds-- great conditions for Yacolt Burn fires. Here is an assumption: This one is HUMAN STARTED like the fire a couple of weeks ago in the same area!!! Where was LAW ENFORCEMENT on a hot windy weekend night patrolling this area? Looking for illegal fires/ underage drinking/ drugs trash dumping? NOPE! It would be cost effective to pay for enhanced LAW enforcement in this area ( especially at NIGHT from 9pm to 2 am) versus the cost of fighting this type of human caused fires !!! Off my soap box for now. A concerned citizen & responsible 4 wheeler! Toyrocs

Please keep in mind (although I do think we need more law enforcement) as of this moment in time we only have ONE LEO (law enforcement officer) that is currently on the pay roll for the DNR for our area. Steve does a great job for the area that he has to cover (its huge for one person I can not quote the sq miles but it's alot.) The only things that we can do to help at this point is to keep our eye's open for people having fires in the Yacolt Burn and then call 911 and they will dispatch a truck to put the fire out and write citations. Other than that all we can do is spread the word that all DNR lands are under a no-fires state until otherwise informed.

08/15/2010 Fire Danger Alert!!
I got a call from Jim Shank who is one of the Safety Officers battling the fire up on Jackson Pass. He tells me that they will be fighting this fire for at least a week or possibly more. They have the roads closed at Four-corners and at the 1500/1600 point (I think he means leading up to Jackson Pass).
He said it is currently fine to ride the sanctioned JC trail loops (bikes and ATVs) but he requested that I spread the word and ask people to please stay off the non-sanction trails (meaning anything but A,B, and C Loops) due to the fire danger. The fire is very unpredictable at this point.

In my post I was thinking of ALL law enforcement but mainly of Clark County Sheriffs who are also understaffed. A couple of weekend "sweeps" with arrests/ citations, vehicle tow-offs with heavy fines may get the "word" out! A can a week ( or month) is all that we ask! ;D Hope they get a handle on this fire soon & everyone involved fighting it stays safe. Toyrocs

Clark County is a great idea I wish they would do that also. I think the big fines is also a great idea. I hope we can get this stuff more undercontrol with the ORV park going in soon.

E-mail received from Brian Poehlein (DNR) Sunday afternoon:
* * * * *
Hi Everyone,
If you haven’t heard already, there is a fire burning in the Western Yacolt Burn area. It evidently started on Saturday and is located primarily on private (Fibre) timberlands at this time off of the L-1500 in section 35. The size is estimated at 60 acres, although there has been some spotting on DNR land. For those of you familiar with that area, it is north of the L-1500 near the Larch Repeater site, north of the Jones Creek Trail system loops and south of the Tarbell trail system.
We are asking folks to spread the word that any motorized recreation use has to be confined to the designated Jones Creek trail system loops only, and we are asking that everyone avoid using the southeastern portion of the Tarbell trail system until further notice.

I'm told it's mostly East of the 1500 road (above the road) on a section of Longview Timber land that crosses the 1500 road. It's maybe a mile or so from the yellow gate above Four-corners that leads to the top of Larch Mt. Some of it has spilled over onto DNR land too.

I received notification from DNR staff today that the base camp for the firefighters will be moving FROM 4-Corners TO Jones Creek Trailhead tomorrow, August 18, 2010.
Please limit travel within the area if possible - if you absolutely need to be up there, please drive slowly and cautiously giving the right away to the fire crews and their equipment.

Update on the fire:
The incident management team will be leaving tomorrow. However there will be a couple of larch camp crews and 5 engines staying the finish mopping up for the week. It sounds like the 1500 rd will be open, but please be courteous and drive carefully through the area. Also please do not drive the road system that goes through the fire as there will be crews working off of it. The fire is looking real good and should be taken care of by the end of the week. If you have any questions feel free to give me a call at 360-280-5467.
