Nice to see some positive press about our neighbors to the east. Very rare to see something positive like that. I hope one day we will have a news outlet like that. I know we are doing good things and will continue to do so.
I dont know how to go about making the fines for these offenses actually hurt say in the neighborhood of 500 the first time then it continues to double up to 3 offenses. After 3 times that person obviously doesnt get the picture and should cool their heels in the pokey for a while and have their rig confiscated and sold at auction. Any thoughts?
I ride the dunes quite a bit as well and would love to see anyone convicted of DUI while out on the dunes have their rig taken on the second conviction (personally I would like to see a 1st conviction it is taken and sold at auction) and sold at auction. Maybe that family that was hit head on sandrail to sandrail (by and impaired driver)would still be a family and able to enjoy the dunes another day.
That is as I see it.

Didn't read the deal posted, but I did read Lances. On that note Drunk Driving is a big deal to me. My thoughts on this are simple and have been for many years now. First DUI should be a suspension of drivers license for 1 year . Second DUI should be a Felony Offense, confiscation of your rig and sold for charity donation to families that have been impacted by drunk drivers. Third DUI would be the removal of drivers license for good, and jail time. Along with these would be extensive fines, by extensive I mean over 1,000 bucks and up garnishing paychecks in the process. I could be a bit more harsh on the first, but I would imagine some people make bad decisions and could change there behavior. Kinda like some of us here that have done illegal wheeling but now have turned 180 degrees to be an advocate for proper etiquette in the woods.

Fivendime im with you on your thoughts as in all the nations roads these should be enforced vehicles confiscated and sold at auction no matter if it were on the dunes or on one of this nations many roads or highways.
Without getting into specific details I can tell you that all of the deceased people I have scraped up off the highway only one was the impaired driver himself. I can honestly say it was very difficult doing a notification to a father and mother that their teenage daughter will not be coming home due to some moron that decided to drive after drinking.
Now dont get me wrong if you want to go out and get drunk and do what you will I am ok with that. When you are done with your Hijinks call a cab or a sober individual to drive you home.
As most of you know I very seldom drink as in a 6 pack would probably last me more then a year if not more. I am going to put this out there right now that if anyone I know is in need of a ride day or night because they have had too much to drink by all means call and call again until you get me. Ya I may not be too wide eyed and bushy tailed but at least you will have a safe ride home and will not have to worry about a DUI or possibly having to deal with killing someone you love or an innocent stranger with family members that love them and expect them home safe and sound.
I understand people have lapses in judgement and make mistakes but DUI is preventable. I am with Fivendime with the first conviction a stiff punishment as some people do make and learn from their mistakes.
I have no sympathy what so ever if someone were to be arrested for DUI a second, third or ninth time. Yes I said ninth time. One uncle of a girl I went to school with had been arrested a total of 9 times for DUI.
I could write for month straight on this topic but I will leave it at this.

I work in a bar. I often see people leave drunk and I hate that.
I have driven more people ( alot of them strangers ) home after my night of DJing. I have also called the cops on customers who promised me they would not be driving.. when I see them start the car I call the cops. would rather see a DUI than a DOA.
I agree with above ideas about enforcement. Dave.

X2 on the call for driving. I have been called too many times by friends stuck out in the woods at midnight. Even though I have to work the next day most of the time I am always there to help. Lets just hope its the other way around when I need it. I too would not hesitate to call the cops on an impaired driver, friend or not, and have threatened that a few times. The point is simple. Make good decisions. Get that DD for life.....like my wife..haha JK
Lance, its funny since my beer out-dates too in my "drink fridge"

I have no problem calling the cops on friend or foe should they decide to drive. I have no tolerence to driving while intoxicated.
After the things I have seen I will not even attempt to get in a car to drive after one beer hours ago. Call me anal but I have seen way more of that stuff then one would want to in a lifetime.
I cant tell you how many drunks I have seen and followed for miles while on the phone with the cops waiting for one of them to catch up with us and get the person stopped. I thought one time was taking too long we had been following him for about 10 minutes and he had almost hit 3 cars head on within 2-3 miles so when he stopped at the light I jumped out and got him to start talking to me until I had a chance to get his keys out of the ignition he was so drunk he couldnt have put them back in there if he wanted to. He got pretty pissed at me and kept asking where his keys were. Luckily a friend of mine who is a deputy got there and took it from there. I took his keys and dropped them behind the drivers seat on the floor. He was way wasted. He needed help getting out of the drivers seat and then couldnt even stand up on his own. I found out later from my friend he blew a .34 thats 4x over the legal limit. I felt that I had made a difference that night and hopefully saved someones life or lives. I just hoped I wouldnt be the first one to the wreck if you know what I mean.

One time at the dunes before all the ban on drinking and riding and all that some friends of mine were sitting around the fire and were pretty lit I had 3 virgin Mt. Dew's and I was feeling pretty good as well.
One friend that doesnt have the best judgement decided it would be a good idea for him to run out to the beach at sand lake and look around. All of the rest of us told him it wouldnt be a good idea after drinking and all. He gets pretty stupid after a few drinks and doesnt have the best judgement sober.
Anyway I told him if he is going to go ride at least put on your helmet. Well while he was getting his helmet I pulled the spark plug wires off of his banshee and he didnt have a clue what was wrong when it wouldnt start. Needless to say he didnt go anywhere but to bed that night.

Needless to say he didnt go anywhere but to bed that night. Some friends of mine did that to a guy they were camping/riding with down at Winchester Bay one time.......except they got video of him trying to start his TRX450R for a few minutes before he got mad and started kicking the tires on the quad and cussing up a storm. Funniest thing I had seen in a long time when I watched that video......

I wish we could have video taped that as well. He didnt get near that frustrated and pissed but he had no clue why it wouldnt start. While he was sleeping it off so to speak I was up early like usual.
I went over and put his plug wires back on and turned the run switch to off and told him after he got up that he must not have had the run switch on. I jumped on his bike and it fired up first kick it was hilarious. He did later find out what I had done and did thank me for keeping one more "stupid" incident from happening. Im just glad no one got hurt other then that pounding headache he had the next day. Wow it was fun to run around with pretty loud exhaust and watch him cringe and moan about it all day long.

I have also called the cops on customers who promised me they would not be driving.. when I see them start the car I call the cops. would rather see a DUI than a DOA. I agree with above ideas about enforcement. Dave. I've worked in few bars and have given many strangers rides home. I completely agree with the statements others have made in regards to enforcement. One night after a guy got cut off and 86'd, I loaded him up in my truck and drove him home. After dropping him off, I went back to work. 30 minutes later the same guy walks in, gets denied service, and once again I load him into my truck and take him home. 10 minutes later he shows up again, this time as a passenger in a friends car. I see them coming, and stop them before they even get in the parking lot. They are still both in the car, so while I explain to the driver (who seemed sober), that this guy is not getting served and that I have taken him home twice now, the drunk tries to swing on me. Luckily, (as he was sitting in the car), I just leaned back and he missed. The driver then freaked out on his friend, and left (I could hear the driver yelling at his drunk buddy as they drove off). Never saw either one of them again.... I also had a good friend die at 22 because he was drunk and rolled his car. Working in bars was the hardest job I ever did, and one I am very glad I don't do anymore. Hat's off to you Hoottie. I don't know how you stay sane.
