I would like to open this up for discussion. Dave Hiatt from Tillamook - Oregon Department of Forestry is asking for our input about how to categorize side-by sides. Feel free to place your feedback as a reply here and I will forward a link to this thread to Dave in early-mid January.
Thanks,
Crystal

As you may know, one of the hot topics in OHV management is how to address the ATV side-by-side use in relation to the current OHV Class I, II, & III categories. I am looking for your ideas on how you think these should be addressed for OHV use in the Tillamook District, in order to educate myself about them and the desires of the users. I would especially like to have input from current side-by-side users as to how you think side-by-side use should be handled, e.g. allowed on quad trails if less than 50 inches wide? with or without weight limits? as their own new category or as part of one of the exising Classes?, etc. Please email me with your ideas regarding side-by-side ATV use. Please include the Year, Make & Model information for your current your side-by-side if you have one, so I can look up the specifications for the unit you are using, e.g. weight, width, etc. I would also appreciate your forwarding this email to any friends of acquaintances of yours who currently use a side-by-side ATV so they can email me with their ideas. Thanks, Dave Hiatt OHV Specialist Tillamook ODF District Office 5005 Third Street Tillamook, OR 97141 (503) 815-7024 dhiatt@odf.state.or.us

Last year I did a quick informal survey of SxS to see what they were all about. I came away with the impression that most of them are either too heavy or too wide to fit within the current Class I ATV guidelines. It seems to me that they fall into Class II? Are SxS ATVs allowed on Class I trails in TSF? If they are not allowed, is there currently any enforcement of this?
The reason I was doing the research was because I wanted to build a Class I legit mini-buggy-ATV, but I just couldn't get it to be both <50" wide and under 800lbs. If the guidelines for Class I were opened up to fit SxS (say <55" and 1200lbs for example), I think I could build a mini-buggy to fit those classifications. If it opens up all the Class I trails in TSF to me, I just might build it.

I would think unless they change the class structure for OHV's in Oregon anyway that the SxS will just be considered a class II. I dont have one but I have no idea how the guys with SxS's feel about being a class II or if they are going to have their own class. I think it would benefit all class II's if they were left in this catagory. That is just my thoughts.

Just to keep things easy SxS's need to stay in Class II or have their own class. With the new riders fit for class I it would all have to be redone if SxS's were included. I think SxS's are more of a quad then a real 4x4. Where do you get one? The quad shop not the Jeep dealer. So give them there own class then if there is not a bridge on a certain trail open it up to 60'' and let the SxS's use it. Maybe we can get some Firebreak 5 type quad/SxS trails. I know 2 quad groups that would support SxS added to the trail system. If it has a saddle, 3 or 4 wheels and is under 50'' it's a quad Class I no weight limits If it has a seat and is over 60'' Class II no weight limits Motorcycle class III If it has a seat, is under 60'' and not street legal it's Class IIII, no need for a drivers license. No weight limits

Has there been any followup from ODF on this?
I see a lot of people online assuming that SxS's are legal on Quad trails, but by the letter of the law most are too big. It would be really nice to get some formal clarification.
