After a day of mudding, on my way down the mountain, my TF999 will not shift out of 1st. Park, reverse, nut, and L seems to work fine. When the lever is in 2 or D it just stays in 1st gear.
Now I was in a lot of water. Does not look like any is in the ATF fluid. Yes I checked the fluid. Not super red, and not black, or inundated with any metal flake.
Could this just be a sensor? What should my first step be? Change the fluid? Drop the pan and change the filter?
Thanks for your help. Has anyone else had this problem?

I have had this happen on a crystler mini van.. was the limp mode.. your tranny may have a malfunction and this is the emergency mode. On my van... I was able to pull over... turn key off and on about 5 or 6 times,,,, then restart the van and it would work for a week or so.. this time decreased until it did not any longer work.. then,,, bye bye van.

I took it to a local trans shop and they said I need a rebuild. I decided to try changing the fluid and filter first. I did that today. The filter was nasty. Not much metal flake to speak of. I just took it on a short test drive, only about 3 miles, and so far it is much better...........not perfect but better. I will drive it a few more times and flush the fluid once more. If this does not fix it I may give you a call Pat.
