As we all know, getting the young adults involved with a motorsports club is a difficult task.
As a motorsports club that is highly involved in getting sanctioned trails in the Yacolt Burn and that has been working closely with DNR, I think that with some planning and some backing from DNR, law enforcement, club members and possibly from a motorsports businesses, and of course with the high schools, we could put together a great presentation for the "kids".
All and any ideas would be great appreciated and accepted!!!
The ideas that were disscussed were: -Trail head stations to hand out info packets -Raffle tickets for "wheeling" products -Discount coupons to Motorsport companies -Info packets to high schools -Presentations at local high schools to "educate" legalized wheeling areas -Pep assemblies with DNR, law enforcement, & Piston's Wild
These are just a few things that could happen if we make them!!! Please add your input and let us know how you would be willing to help out!!!

I think when we get a poker run put together and promote it heavily to the 4 wheel drive shops ect and to the places kids hang out (I know the kids under 18 can't participate as drivers unfortunatley) that will be a way to reach some of them. The hard part is getting a few of the kids to get on board. Once that is done and they are believers in what they are doing they will spread the word to all their friends and the word will spread.
I know when I was in school pretty much all of us that were wheeling ect would hang out together and go on snow runs ect. So I think that if we can get a small group at each school on board they will spread the word to the kids far better then us "old goats" could.

Well I consider myself to still be young at 27, but I still know a few people in high school from friends of friends. I can ask them what they think about it and what they would be interested in doing. I was wondering about a run with them riding in the passenger seat. Maybe a raffle for a ride from some kids. Or a simple off road safety class with some time riding with people on the trail experiencing a good time legally.

Thats a great idea. I like the safety class and trail ride combo. If for nothing else they will learn something about doing it the safest way. I would be curious to know what the "kids" would think about it and how it would be taken.
I know when I was younger we used to go on the snow run every year with my dad's old clubs. That is pretty much where I got the disease or addiction how ever you want to look at it. I loved just riding along and of course had to rub it in to my buddies the next week back at school. They were always asking about how could they come along and we did take a couple of them with us and they loved it. Mind you this was all before I was old enough to drive.
All great idea's fiveanddime

Following is the letter that I sent to the Department of Natural Resources in response to conversations we've had with them in the past regarding a motorized educational program for high school students. I strongly recommend that all club members rally together and support Kira on this project - this will be a massive undertaking but the payback will be well worth it...
I am also moving this thread to the club events section as a sticky becasue this project will quickly become front and center for the club and deservedly so...
Thank you in advance for your contributions of time and energy to this project - to be successful - this will require "all hands on deck"...

well hello! haha I'm young...19! i know lotsa youngsters that wouldnt mind bein in off road clubs...the only problem is that when we try we dont get welcomed to warmly. people think we come around to cause trouble, and that we dont know anything. the fact is, we're trying to learn, and some kids give others a rap sheet. places to go to get our attention would be procaliber, bent lever, cycle gear, east county truck repair in Washougal, parts stores, the shell station in battleground, on weekends head up to wheeling spots, drive up nd tell us whats up. its the welcoming factor that'll draw em in. its amazing how loyal us teens can be if you shows us some friendship. we like learning new tricks to work on our rigs; and could always use old guys to give us advise on wheelin and bein able to show you what we can do with our rigs.

Gotta admit your enthusiasm to help is great but let me specify why its so hard to be the "nice" guy. I am one of the youngest members of Pistons Wild. I was one of those guys that had parties up at larch, wheeled illegally, and tore things up. I often find myself thinking how lucky I was to not get caught and to why the heck I did it in the first place. The problem we have is that most kids aren't willing to listen to us, I know since I was a kid just a few short years ago. I would love to be able to just swing by the wheeling spots and say no....but.....that would get people very angry, again been there before. Our goal as concerned off road enthusiasts is to assist DNR with the current problems in the Western Washington area and abroad. If we dont we loose the great opportunity to open new land use areas. Till we see things change for the better, its like I say a few rotten apples spoils the whole barrel. Best thing we can do as a whole it to just get the word out to our friends and people we know to stop the illegal activity, because they are enforcing the law now more so then ever with the new DNR Enforcement Officer that is patrolling the Yacolt Burn. Again, I admire your enthusiasm. I hope to meet you and some of your friends at the next Pistons Wild Club meeting! Till Then, FiveNdime

Hi there Cutestdamnredneck,
I wanted to thank you for your honesty and expressing your thoughts. I'm one of the old guys now, but I remember how I was treated as a teenager growing up. It like I was in the way more than I was someone who wanted to learn.
Here is my invitation to you and anyone who is serious about this sport and/or our club of Piston's Wild. If you attend any of the meeting and/or functions and your not "warmly welcomed" I will personally quit as a member of the club. I'm confident in the people and the mission in this organization enough to say that. I also know that in my short time as being a member, that the people of the club would like nothing short of seeing our youth grow up to be responsible and knowledgeable participants of this sport we love so much. With that said, I encourage you to join us at a meeting or on a run.
I look forward to meeting you in person,
Douglas (aka Wyldman)

Well now, Ms. redneck. You have certainly "thrown down the gauntlet". I'd like to say that this club,( to which I am merely an applicant, not a full member yet), is EXTREMELY interested in fostering a sense of belonging with people your age group. To that end, they have taken on a sponsoring and supporting role for the Reynolds High School drag racing team.
I am the auto shop teacher there and love to go off-roading. Some of my students (ages 16 - 18) go along on these trips with their own vehicles. At first, they didn't like being told that some of the places they enjoyed driving were illegal and off-limits. But they have realized that the areas we are planning will be so much better than what was being used before, that the wait will be worth it. They have also come to understand that the impact one single irresponsible driver can have is HUGE! Anyone may see the behavior and apply that impression to the entire class of off-roaders. They also like being able to ask technical questions and receive solid advice when making decisions about mods and builds. It's kinda like having a lot of really cool uncles.
Here's my offer: Come out and run with us next Saturday night. The Snowy night run. All of the people that have answered your post will be there. As Wyldman said, "if you don't get a warm welcome...," I'll be very surprised. Bring your friends, we are a family-oriented group. And don't worry about having a suitable vehicle. As long as it's a 4x4 you should be fine. If you don't have a CB, I can loan you one, even. Oh, and the pizza is on me!

I hope I didn't come across as rude....if I did please let me know This club and its members are great, they welcomed me as a young person with great warmth in being a newbie to wheeling ethics and even new to the sport in general. I have met some great people here and cant wait to meet even more. They have taught me quite a bit. I second what Wyldman said. If you dont get the welcome I received, I will personally leave this club as well. I believe in it and its people that much. The night run Moose mentioned is in the Club Events section. FiveNdime.....or Joey

lol like ramrod says.....dont worry about scaring me off. hahaha i like challenges and i dont get scared to easy. as for the offer of a ride..thanks lol but all i really need to do is put in a new rear driveline and i should be good to go. i'll pass the word along the line and see if some people are free. i have a diesel competition saturday mornin...but im sure i'll be free that night. ohhhh nd fivendime/ Joey......ive been there and done that when it comes to partying on larch, illegal wheeling and plain stupid stuff. there's certain ways you can say things and word choices that help when speaking to people when your trying to get them to see your way. when i say to tell people whats up, i dont mean get in their face or act like a no-it-all. (not saying you are so dont think i am!!!!) what im sayin is that you let them know nicely that DNR is handing out tickets, how they could ruin it for everyone else and give them the chance to help do it the right way.....or maybe its just cuz im a girl that i can do this. so far reception has been nice on this site! i know i can get kinda.....enthusiastic...but thats just who i am. im lookin forward to helpin out anyway i can.
