So where to start... I think that it was back in June when I saw that Teresa Sullivan was going to be putting on the Trophy Challenge again for this year. Then I took a look at some pictures and reread some of the trip reports from last years event thinking about how close we got to the top spots and it got that competitive fire burning again. I then ran into Teresa at Junes PNW4WDA meeting where I had a chance to talk to her for a few minutes and get a registration forum for the event. From there it was on! First it was finding another driver and rig as a team consists of two rigs and four members. A quick phone call to the Crowders and I had another driver "Darel" and rig "bruiser". So now we had a team that consisted of a Jeep and a Jeep, a Daryl and a Darel. We just needed another match... Morgan and Neibuer "aka" the Tom's! There it was, team "Piston's Wild"!!!
As time went on a couple more teams from our club came out of the woodwork. They had crazy names like "We cant do this" and "Drive worse". Okay those weren't their actual team names. But I dont see their trip reports so I guess Ill tell the story how I want! LOL
Now fast forward to 8am Saturday September 22nd. There are 48 people, 12 teams, and only one trophy. Its on like Donkey Kong!!!
All three PW teams lined up and ready to roll!
Some of the Competition
Team 4Wheel Parts
Lights Out Racing with the Toyota/Jeep combo
Everyone at the drivers meeting
At the drivers meeting they did one last rundown of the rules and then started calling out team numbers in a random order. Teams were leaving the staging area every five minutes. Here's team NAXJA headed out with TORX leading the way.
About 2/3 of the teams had left when we finally had out number called. Piston's Wild team 8! It was our time to shine!
Tom and I getting into the right frame of mind! Business up front, party in the rear!
With Darel and Tommy leading and Tom and I in the rear we managed to make about 4 correct turns before we made our first mistake of the day.
Not even five minutes into the run and we were on the side of the road having the first of many team meetings.
We quickly got back onto the right track running up the first section of University Firepower. Then onto a couple more turns, some of which were wrong, and then passing by a rig or four that we may have seen before we were on the right track again.
It took a little longer then expected to get back into the hang of reading the direction. We must have traveled twice the distance that we needed to in order to get to the first check point. But after that we were off to the races! One by one the turns were being checked off of the list and before we knew it we were at Airplane hill.
Darel in the filter
Daryl in the filter
We passed through the filter and then shot up the hill to find check point #2 and a three hour traffic jam...
There was one team on the featured obstacle and three teams ahead of us waiting for their turn.
The line up behind us...
After some lunch and watching the other teams from a distance we came up with a plan of attack... It involved some rock and log stacking, winching, good spotting and driving.
Lots of hard work and a blown out tire later and we were at the top! A quick tire change and we were moving on.
Checking the turns off one by one and before we knew it we were at waterfall and check point #3.
It took a couple tries but we had both Jeeps up in no time at all. And we were the first team to get both rigs up without the help of a winch. Woot Woot!!!
