Tree Savers - How & WhyA tree can serve as an excellent anchor point for getting out of a tough spot, but never attempt to wrap a cable or chain around it. In addition to being extremely dangerous, this improper winching practice can damage or kill the tree. Rather, always use a tree-saver strap, along with a clevis/D-shackle. When used properly the Tree Savers prevent the cable from cutting into and damaging the tree bark. If saving a tree isn't good enough reason to use a tree saver device - U.S. Forest Service Wilderness Regulation #36CFR261.6 states that damaging any tree or vegetation is a violation resulting in a $200 fine and the Department of Natural Resources will fine you for the current market value of the tree. And now for "The More You Know" part of the story: Think about how awesome it is that that tree is there for your use - right where you need it - right when you need it. But this time, you skip the tree saver step of the recovery and sling the cable directly around the tree. You'll get out this time, but the next time you or someone you know comes back to that trail feature and gets in a jam -- that tree isn't there anymore because you "debarked" a ring around the tree and it died. Stay tuned for "School House Rock" Sliders... lol
