URGENT NOTICE REGARDING FOREST WATCH PATROLS!
Until further notice, I would like to request that night-time forest watch patrols only be called by current Piston's Wild Club Members. Applicants and guests may attend if invited by a club member.
I would also like to request that the club member that calls the run - please submit a brief written report within 48 hours of the patrol (with specific details).
In addition, please make arrangements for at least one member of the patrol group to have attended the DNR Forest Watch Patrol Training. At this time, those members are:
Darel & Crystal Crowder (oldyellr & pistonschick) Bill & Brandon Hutchens (bchutchens) Bill Manbeck (scrambledbill) Bill Meyer (muddyracer) Rick & Kira Dominiak (shortbus & outlaw525chick) Lance & Margaret Schiedler (racincowboy & margo) Dave Huttula (hootie)
DNR is scheduled to provide Forest Watch Patrol training at our November 2009 club meeting - where everyone will have an opportunity to get certified.
Thank you in advance for your cooperation and I apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. Please feel free to contact me directly if you have any questions or concerns.
Kind regards,
Crystal

Thank You Crystal,
Another note I would really like to see is that the topic of this be discussed on the Members Only Forum as far as when we are going up. If you disagree please PM me and I will let you know why.

Also if a guest is invited/attends a Forest Patrol called by a Piston's Club member does that count as club run? Much thanks, flip.flop

Also if a guest is invited/attends a Forest Patrol called by a Piston's Club member does that count as club run? Much thanks, flip.flop Yes - anyone can attend Forest Watch Patrol training. I will need to get back to you about whether or not it counts as a club run. The requirements are at least 1 meeting, 1 fun run and 1 work party -- I'm not sure where patrols would fit into that. - We request that applicants attend 1 meeting to ensure that they are intersted and understand the administrative and political side of the sport. - We request that applicants attend 1 fun run to ensure that they respect the lands where we recreate and get along well with others. - We request that applicants participate in 1 work party to ensure that they are willing to give back to the lands where we recreate. It might fit into the work party requirement - but I don't think we can equate 5 hours of driving your 4x4 around the forest on gravel roads to 8-10 hours of spreading gravel at a trailhead or picking up garbage in the forest. I will bring this up at the next board meeting to get a better idea of where this fits in. Thank you again, Jessi for your interest - please send me a PM with your contact information and I will make certain you get contacted when we schedule the next patrol. Crystal

I'm not pushing the topic, just simply curious what the Club rules and thoughts are on Trail Patrole volunteers(non-Clubmember status)... Also wondering what people's thoughts are on Trail Patrol & picking up trash? To me it seems kinda worth while to pick up what you can when you can. I usually pick up trash anytime I'm in the forest, Yacolt included just thinking aloud here. Also I was curious if trail patrol hours count toward NOVA Funds? flip.flop

Also I was curious if trail patrol hours count toward NOVA Funds? flip.flop Thank you for your questions Jessi. Yes - picking up garbage is always a good idea - no matter where you are. But, it you are performing Forest Watch patrol and doing it properly, you should be busy taking notes and handing out educational materials. If you spend an hour picking up a dump site - that's one hour you missed educating someone or providing wide coverage of the forest for the patrol. Both functions can and do go together, but it is important to give 110% to the designated task at hand. And Yes - the hours that we spend performing official forest watch patrols count towards the Education and Enforcement NOVA grants that DNR manages. The exception here being that the hours only count for those volunteer hours on forest watch patrol performed by individuals who have completed the DNR required Forest Watch Patrol training. Wait for it... The next Forest Watch Patrol Training being offered by DNR will take place at the next Piston's Wild Motorsports Club meeting. Tuesday, November 10th, 2009 - starting promptly at 7:00pm at Pied Piper Pizza in Orchards on 4th Plain Road. Jessica Kimmick and other possible DNR reps will be in attendance. This training should last between 1-2 hours depending on the quantity of questions from the group. Please bring your Driver's License with you and be prepared to fill out and sign a form giving the DNR law enforcement officer permission to perform a background check. More info to follow next week in the Yacolt Burn Forest Matters section of the forum. Crystal

Just curious what this Forest Watch Patrol is all about? What are the expectations and responsibilties of the patrol-ees?
I skimmed the site looking for more info but didn't see any.

DNR Forest Watch Patrol Training
Tuesday - November 10, 2009 Training starts at 7:00pm - (should not last more than 1.5 hours)
Pied Piper Pizza in Orchards
This forest watch patrol training is required to participate in many of our activities in the Yacolt Burn. A refresh course is required once each year.
Please bring your drivers license and be prepared to fill out a permission form for a background check to be performed (don't panic - this is not as serious as it sounds). Background checks are only required every other year.

Just curious what this Forest Watch Patrol is all about? What are the expectations and responsibilties of the patrol-ees? I skimmed the site looking for more info but didn't see any. Forest watch patrols are basically more trained sets of eyes in the woods to see what is going on out there as Law Enforcement has a limited staff. As patrol-ees we contact the public in an educational and informational manner. Patrol-ees submit to a backround check done by DNR Law Enforcement. We usually only have training once a year. So if possible I would show up tonight. They will be able to give more specifics on it at the club meeting tonight. Hopefully that sheds some light on it. Lance
