I didn't realize that Vancouver Four Wheelers had called the same run as us. So, It worked out very well. We had 8 vehicles that ran out of Sunset Falls up FR42 over to 4220 and down 41 back to Sunset Falls. We encountered about 2 feet of snow that was very crusty and a lot more challenging than two weeks before. We had stopped to take a break... when a GP Ranger showed up and proceeded to start writing tickets to most of the group for various violations. Of which some were questionable. Go to the "Safety and Education" section for more details on the restriction of your rig in order to be street legal. All in all we had a Great day. The group from Vancouver 4 wheelers were a great bunch of people.
Thanks for an awesome day,
Wyldman

Thank you everyone who came on yesterday's snow run. Great conditions, great snow, and great people. I"m glad we meet up with some of the Vancouver 4 Wheelers, good group of people and allot of fun to snow wheel with!! Sorry guy's I have no pics, I forgot to bring my camera and my video camera on this run Regarding the: UNITED STATES DISTRICT COURT VIOLATION NOTICE (TICKET) If you could please write down any and everything you remember that was said and took place on Saturday while the situation/event is fresh in your mind. That would be really helpful in fighting the ticket at court for those that are/will. I know there were some of you that had conversations with the Officer and you did not get a ticket. If you could please write down everything that you can remember that was said and e-mail, PM me, or I can meet up with you and make a photo copy of your notes/statement at Kinko's, that would be so incredibly helpful for me and other's to fight this...? FYI, I will be contesting the ticket and pleading "not guilty". I will be reading and reviewing the "RCW Offense Charged : 36CFR261.54(D)" in the next few days and will post any useful information that I come across. I'd really like to get together with those that got a ticket for Lunch/Dinner and get our statement/story's in order and matching? I've lost track of the name already, but I'd really like to talk to the gentleman who was driving the blue classic blazer and find out what he said and heard from the Officer? If anyone one has contact info. e-mail, user name, etc. please PM me... Also, if we fight this now and win, we would gain some credibility with the Gifford Pinchot National Forest Officer, and he would be more likely to work with us not against us. Ultimately we have the same goal, legal & responsible use of the National Forest by the public. Quick Thoughts: #1: How do you measure bumper height with out a tape measure or measuring device? #2: How do you measure bumper height in the snow? #3: How do you accurately measure bumper height, when the vehicle is parked on a gravel mound? #4: What does "inadequate mud flaps mean?" #5: If my mud flaps are the same width as my tire and cover 2/3 of the the tire how is that inadequate? #6: If my vehicle is not street legal how come Vancouver Police, Clark County Sheriff's, and State Patrol say it is? #7: How come the Officer didn't talk to the two lifted Toyota's(taller than my toyota pickup) coming up the same road on his way down? #8: How come the previous National Forest Officer Al Knorr, told me that my truck is street legal and now all of a sudden the new officer says that it isn't? flip.flop

I'm sorry to hear about this guys. It's a shame it had to happen to such a good group of people.
Where did this happen (I might have missed it)?
It sounds like violations consisted of mud flaps, fender flares, bumper height, and front plates?
Keep us all updated. I was hoping to do a lot of snow runs in the GPNF, but having to worry about that extra 1/2" of tire sticking out, or extra 2" of bumper height definitely kills the motivation.

To Whom it May Concern:
I am sorry to hear about the citations. Although most do seem to be for trivial reasons and you were all likely at the wrong end of a LEO's bad day in the forest - I need to ask you all to refrain from the name calling of GP staff and to please take the strategizing to fight your violations OFF-LINE.
This is not a Piston's Wild Motorsports battle and we can't afford for any mis-perceptions at this time.
We, as a club, have always planned on working with the GP staff in the near future for the obvious reason that the GP backs up to the Yacolt Burn and is one of two obvious next steps to expand ORV trails in SW Washington.
BUT - we're not ready to go there at this time. Nor do we have the membership available to start working on another project without jeopardizing the project currently in the works -- the Yacolt Burn ORV Recreation area.
While I agree that it might be a good idea to invite GP staff to a meeting or on a ride - I also strongly feel that it does not prove to be beneficial to open that door until we are ready to jump in with both feet - and we (as a club) are just not at that point yet...
So again, I understand your frustrations and will leave this thread active until end of day Monday, November 30th, to give you all a chance to find another method of communication for this issue.
Feel free to take your communications about this situation to another "not so public" forum and feel free to use our PM system to communicate - but this topic does not align well with one of the primary objectives of this forum which is to build partnerships and alliances with governing land managers.
Again - I understand your frustration, we have also experienced a go-round with GP Rangers in the past as well - we did not get a ticket, but only because we were armed with a printed copy of the regulations when the incident took place - he had to back down. I wish you all the best of luck in your battle to fight those tickets.
Thank you for your understanding that this forum is for educational purposes and to further the cause of opening new motorized trails in the area. Any topic of disucssion that might detract from those intentions must be moderated.
Please feel free to PM me if you have any questions regarding this post.
Kind regards,
Crystal Crowder Club President Piston's Wild Motorsports

i think that the invitation to them was to let them know that we as a group are on the side and want to preserve the forest as well. maybe knowing that when they see trucks with the club decal they will know that we are the good guys.

Crystal, You make a very good point. Were not here to do battle for tickets. I would also stress the same point as to get in contact with each other as soon as possible. On that note, I think that they should be invited. For 2 reasons. One is that we do allot of playing in that area during the winter. Two, it seems they had no clue who we were or what we stand for. The immediate accusation of "tearing up the trail" attitude warrants an invite to show them we do care and that we dont tear things up. Responsible and careful wheeling is probably something they rarely if ever see. Granted I am sure some of the rigs were in the wrong, but if we get our name out now they will more then likely be wanting us to help in the future instead of having to introduce ourselves fresh when the time comes. Maybe not now of course, but in the near future. Just my rant...
