Hey Jon,
Ron Boyer is the President and General Manager of Courtesy Ford. ronboyer@courtesyportland.com
Following is his personal quote from the website:
My only interaction at Courtesy Ford has been with the Parts and Service Department. I've "spoken" with the service manager (John Cook) on a few occasions and I have found him to be a reasonble man. He was very hard to get access to - but once I got there, we were able to agree on how to move forward like reasonable people do...
You HAVE to go there in person and make a nuisance of yourself and only the staff at management level has the authority to "fix" your problem. Anymore, when I walk in - they all scamper like cockroaches - because they know that if I'm not happy - we're all going in to have a chat with John Cook!
Stay on them - remain calm but intense and get what you know you deserve!
Good luck!
Crystal

I think going back to the start is overkill. I don't think it's unreasonable to expect them to make good on a driveshaft, though. I'm sure Crystal is right, it's going to take a trip up the food chain. They may not even cover the entire cost, but should be willing to pay for part of it. I had Six States build me new front shaft with my core ends, with new u-joints installed for $129, so it's really not a budget buster. Of course, you may have a double cardan front shat, but that's not that many more dollars.
As an aside, I found myself and my dog in one of the photos you posted on Pirate.

Stay on them - remain calm but intense and get what you know you deserve! Good luck! Crystal yeah I figure I'll have to go down and be an annoyance. I just can't though right now. I've taken off to much time already dealing with this thing, so for today they are lucky. I did get up early though and send off a email to Brian the used car manager, Ron Boyner, the public relations contact they have listed, the Oregon Attorney General, and every Portland news agency I could find an email address for. I followed it up with a call to the AG Consumer hotline to see what if any options I have. They basically told me I don't have any recourse under the lemon law. Basically the lemon law only applies to new vehicles, or used vehicles within the first 12 months, so that rules me out. I might have a claim under deceptive practices though. On 9/2/09 they performed a vehicle pre-inspection that supposedly included the following Pre-delivery inspection completed Oil and filter changed chassis lubricated Drivability/performance checked Brakes checked Steering/suspension checked Maintenance inspection completed Air filter replaced Front brakes replaced Wheel bearing/hub replaced Washed/detailed Manufacturer's recommended maintenance performed I'm obviously not a mechanic, but I'd think that if they had done all of this they would have known that the U-Joints had basically cooked themselves and would soon fail. Maybe I am wrong.... I think going back to the start is overkill. I don't think it's unreasonable to expect them to make good on a driveshaft, though. I'm sure Crystal is right, it's going to take a trip up the food chain. They may not even cover the entire cost, but should be willing to pay for part of it. I agree, and I really dont want to go back to ground zero but the idea is tempting. I also know that I basically have no option there. Thats fine, ultimately though I would like some sort of compensation from them on this. Meet me half way, offer to do something, or at this point... just return my calls. So far I've gotten nothing from them other than silence, and thats the part thats frustrating. And your right, the front shaft is fairly cheap so thats good. The principle gets me though. I've put 700 miles of pavement on this thing and already had to replace / repair both drive shafts. That and the lack of any sort of response from them is frustrating. I just can't get over that yet for some reason. On the aside.... In this one?

I'm happy to report that I seem to be making some headway with Courtesy. I dont know that we will come to an agreement where we are both happy, but I think we can come to one where we are happier. They seem to be indicating that they are now unhappy with the FJ because.... well I am not really sure, and maybe this is not exactly what they are trying to convey to me. I am in contact with John at Courtesy and he seems to be making efforts to help..... this is a good thing. Jon's Jeep lesson's # 1. A bikini top will keep you dry when driving in most light rain. # 2. Leaving you bikini top on overnight and thinking, It wont rain that hard will result in a small amount of water being deposited in your seat. # 3. Emptying the puddle off your bikini top will not cause the water to cascade down the outside of the door. It will instead cause the water to fall inside the door. # 4. Emptying this puddle while sitting in the seat will cause you to get wet.

My buddy in his FJ40 used to always carry large trash bags.....not for trash but to slip over his seats when it rained and he was away.
Kodak moment I'm sure.

Yeah, that's it. You can see Shane's tail in front of me.
Mine sprays water on me through the opening in the back of the soft door. It will get better when I swap the straight tub on, I suspect. Then the door will close all the way. It's not like I'm gonna melt.

Jon,
Good luck on your battle with courtesy. I know Crystal has a following there after their issues with the work truck. Anyhow if you leave the bikini top on overnight with a bit of rain on the way you need a trail cover from Bestop. I have one that keeps the dust, rain and cats out of my jeep. For I would hate to have to have a serious "talk" with the cat that decides my jeep is a good place to be. Needless to say it wouldnt end well for the cat.
Nuff said.

Happy Jon Happy Jon Happy Jon!!! Thanks to the assistance of John Cook I can happily report that Courtesy has stepped up to right the wrongs.... or something like that. I don't know that we'll ever do business again, but I've learned some things here and they've corrected some things.... so with out going to far into the details, I am happy with how it worked out. Not happy it happened, but happier now that its resolved... I just realized that while I had the before pics I never took after pics. Honestly I hadn't even looked at it since picking it up. Heres my new shaft and SYE though. Looks pretty sweet to me. It sure does drive smooth.... Night and day difference. Time to go spend some money... ;D

Nice job with getting it resolved to satisfaction or close too it. You sounded pretty down and out glad to see that has turned around. Now my question is how is it having all the "shiny" new stuff underneath that jeep. Does this mean you are going to roll it over for all of us to see your new parts? Hopefully not.
Looks great with all those new parts underneath it. Glad it is nice and smooth like it should have been before.

So in addition to SYE's and CV shafts, and LMNOP's (You got those on your jeep right?) I want to make sure I also have the proper recovery and safety gear. I was thinking of this while the best prepared contest was going on, and I think it was at that pointn that rescue ranger came crashing into my feet..... Anyway, I am trying to figure out where to cram all this stuff into the jeep, and not have it fly out, smack me in the head etc... Fire Extinguishers - pics or thoughts on where to mount these? I want something thats out of the way, yet close to the driver and easily accesible. Hi-Lift - Inside or outside? I've seen people say inside, keeps them clean and out of the weather others say outside, less noise doesn't take space etc. CB - Center console, roll bar, windshield, behind the glove box, under a seat.... gazillion different places for these go. First aid kit - My old land cruiser had one bolted to the body that I always thought was cool. Kinda something like this... www.cpr-savers.com/Industrials/fakcasesmetal.html recovery stuff / tools - I've got a bag right now thats got my strap, snatch block, winch controller, tree saver, wheel chocks etc in it and some tool kits I would just throw in the back of the FJC. I'd like to find a more permanent solution that is secure yet cheap. My jeep doesn't seem to have come with the trunk option. I don't know whats up with that. ;D I'd usually just throw this stuff in the back of the truck and be done, but I dont really see that as a good option in the Jeep. I realize this stuff comes down to personal preference, but am looking for options and ideas...

Ultimately I want a rear bumper with a carrier and a rack, but thats not in the budget right now....

Ultimately I want a rear bumper with a carrier and a rack, but thats not in the budget right now.... I wouldnt go any bigger than a 33 inch tire on the tail gate. Unless your running wide TOYO mt's which are HEAVY! If you like it there you can always do the bestop tire carrier that enforces the mounts really well and hangs a tire off it.

Thanks, I figured I was ok for a bit. Eventually I want a swing out tire carrier, but thats going to have to wait for a bit. Got my gears, lockers, air compressor and shaft today. I put them in the jeep which really didn't seem to be that hard. I shifted into 4 Wheel Drive though and didn't really notice any improvement in traction. Maybe I did something wrong? Here's how it looks.... Maybe I need to move some of this to the front? ;D
